Question Canned food: How long can you safely keep it? How long can you safely keep canned food? Answer from Katherine Zeratsky, R.D., L.D. Mayo Clinic nutritionist Commercially prepared canned food has a fairly long shelf life, as long as it's stored properly. How long you can safely keep canned food depends on the type of food. According to the Department of Agriculture: High-acid foods — such as tomatoes, fruit and fruit juice — can be stored for up to 18 months Low-acid foods — such as vegetables and meat — can be stored for two to five years When you're shopping for canned food, examine the containers. Don't buy canned products that are dented, leaking or bulging, or those that show any signs of tampering. At home, store canned food in a cool, dry place. Avoid cabinets over the stove, under the sink, or in a damp basement or garage. When you're preparing canned food, check the expiration date on the label to be assured of freshness. It's also a good idea to clean the top of the container before you open it. If the container spurts liquid or foam when you open it or the food has a foul odor, don't eat it. Simply throw the container and the food away.

I read an article that basically said dating is more of a marketing tool than anything else and causes people to throw out perfectly good food. The smell and appearance test seems to be the best.

Oh I agree. Smell and apperarance first. I do most my shopping at the salvage grocery store first before the regular grocery store. It is just so much cheaper. Lord if dented cans are bad then I will have to throw out everything in my cabinet. Also if I open something that truly is bad and it came from the salvage grocery store they will take it back and refund or replace no questions asked.
AW man I hate you dont have any in your area. Thank goodness I have like 6 within 30 miles of me. You can get anthing from groceries, cleaning supplies, paper supplies, health & beauty, dog food oh my just about name it for less than half price. They buy from anywhere and everywhere dented cans or cases that have been busted open. They even have meats. A few weeks ago I got a two pack of ribeye steaks for $3 the best tasting prettiest meat. They had gotten it cheap because a store had ordered way too much and was not going to be able to get rid of it before expiration date.
