So i have been googling my ass off and can't work out who is correct.  Is eating tinned tuna bad for you? How much can you eat?

What if you adore tuna and want to eat 3 tins a day?

I don't fully understand the whole thing about mercury being in tuna ??

PS: How do you get rid of the new status member thing so that  my posts don't have to be checked by a moderator before being posted?

Thanks!

I'm not sure how much mercury is in canned tuna, but it is probably a question that you can ask a nutritionist or dietician. I do know mercury in tuna comes from what they are eating and where they live, not from being in a can. It is true of most fish. Some contain more than others. I know this is of not much help. Wish I knew more about it myself.

As for the new status stuff............. I never noticed that when I first joined. I wonder if that is something new? I'm sure your status will change quickly.

Sorry I can't be of more help.

I found a website that might be helpful. It gives some recommendations on eating canned tuna. Interestingly - eating the good stuff (albacore) is worse for you. Go figure.

Here is another link that is about mercury and eating fish in general. Your question really got me thinking about this as I am trying to add more fish to my diet.

To avoid mercury, eat fish that are low on the food chain like Tilapia.

Tuna is high on the food chain, so it has more mercury.

I have never heard of a limit for "normal" people - pregnant woman should limit their intake to 1 can a week.

I was reading a health booklet and both a DR and a Naturopath said that all people should only be eating 95-150grams of tinned tuna per fortnight, pregnant or not. They listed a lot of fish you shouldn't eat. Basically you need to avoid the larger fish of the ocean such as tuna, salmon, shark ... because these have more mercury.

Stick with the smaller fish, whiting and other stuff like that.

I've been eating so much tinned tuna lately, i thought it was healthy for me. It really puts a downer on things. Oh well... i am still going to probably have tuna every day, just maybe not 4 or 5 cans lol
