Does anyone have sugestions for easy on the run, high protein low fat and low carb foods.  I am a pre-op.  They want me eating 100g of protein a day right now.... It is tough.  I have tried shakes, so far they are so foamy i can not imagine eating one post-op.  I dont eat fish, love cheese and chicken.

Thanks Marci

Muscle Milk Lite, which is a shake and available at Costco is a good option, and useful immediately post op as well. Chocolate taste just like chocolate  milk.
I swear by PURE PROTEIN bars. The "regular" size ones are 20 mg. protein. I have one for my breakfast everyday and usually one for "dessert". The chocolate deluxe is my favorite! Available at Fred Meyer, Target, Albertsons.

The protein is critical for healing, and great that you are building up before surgery!  Good luck and keep us posted!

Hi Kathy,

I actually was looking at them yesterday at BJ's and thought they would have too many carbs?  I am so confused about all of this. Oh but maybe what I saw was not light.  I will look for these and try them,  I wonder if I can find the muscle milk in a sample size so If I don't like it I don't have a Costco size amount left.

Thanks Again
Marci

Hi Marci,

It can be very confusing. I read so much about low carb,  no carb, etc. pre-op and even post-op. Here is what I know for sure:
1. every doc has their own program/plan
2. not all docs have you work with a nutritionist, but finding one that specializes in wls is beneficial.
3. post op it will be HARD if not IMPOSSIBLE to get 100 g. protein in, therefore, you are loading up now, which is great. I am just shy of 10 months out and have only been getting 100 g.  protein daily for a couple of  months now. I consume between 800 to 900 cal. per day.
4. If you eat protein first, you won't have to worry about carbs.
5. Carbs are good for you (veggies, fruits, etc.)
6. My "plan" doesn't call for zero carbs,  but I do not consume rice or pasta, as they have little protein and would fill up my pouch. SO THE WAY I LOOK AT IT, I want to give my body protein first, then a bit of veggies or fruits, even whole wheat bread second.
7. I LOVE CHEESE, but I use "lite" cheese. My favorite cheese has always been Swiss. I found Jarlsberg Light Swiss, which is wonderful.
8. You can find MUSCLE MILK LITE at most grocery stores and some drug stores (Walgreens).  Muscle Milk is premade, and not foamy like the Slim Fast and Atkins shakes.
9. REMEMBER CARBS ARE GOOD AND ESSENTIAL FOR YOU...
10. If you are having RNY, you will be staying away from sugars and high fat foods anyway, as they have the high protential to make you dump. ALWAYS FOCUS ON PROTEIN FIRST, GET IN YOUR LIQUIDS, AND YOU WILL BE FINE!

Hugs,
Kathy

HI Marci,
Do you like chai tea?  Pam T. on this website makes a great protein hot chai tea mix.  27 gr. of protein.
Also Try:
Beef or Turkey jerky
Dried Edamame
Greek yogurt
cottage cheese
nuts
hard boiled eggs

If you;re looking for low carb, you're gonna have to stick with basic proteins, the meats.
Sound like your dr wants you on an Atkins diet, check out their website for ideas also.

I'm in love with this!!!!
Edamame Dip

2 cups shelled, cooked, drained and cooled edamame
1/4 diced onion
1/2 tightly packed cilantro or parsley
1 large garlic clove sliced
1/4 fresh lime or lemon juice- I used 1/4 cup out of the bottle and it was still good!
1 Tbsp brown miso
1 tsp kosher salt
1 tsp red chili paste
1/4 tsp black pepper
5 Tbsp olive oil

Place all ingredients EXCEPT the oil in a food processor.  Process for 15 seconds. Stop and scrap the sides.
process another 15 seconds. With the processor running on low, slowly drizzle in olive oil.  Once all the oil has been added, stop and scrap the sides again. Blend well.  Taste and adjust seasoning as needed.

ENJOY!!!!!
