I used to LOVE fruitcake.  Since surgery 3 years ago I haven't had any.  I was just wondering if anyone has or knows of a WLS friendly recipe.

I think Alton Brown's Fruit Cake is the best:  http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/alton-brown/free-range-fr uitcake-recipe/index.html

It's not weight loss friendly.  Substuting the sugar might make it WLS "survivable"

Personally, I'd make it real and eat it accordingly adjusting other calories as needed.

Thank you so much for your recipe.  It looks fantastic!  When I was in high school (a hundred years or so ago (lol) our band sold a fruit cake called Texas Maner fruit cake.  It was truly an awesome delight.  The only one I have ever found since then that even came close was the fruit cake made in Corriscana (sp) Texas.  I REALLY REALLY love fruit cake and don't understand why others don't.

LOL......you're the only other person I've ever met who loves fruitcake like I do! People always look at me like I'm crazy when I say that. I have the BEST recipe EVER for a Dark Applesauce Fruitcake..........my Mom gave it to me years ago. It's not wls friendly, but I'm sure subs could be made, or, what I plan to do, like the other poster said, is to make it like it is, and just eat TINY portions at a time, and cut other calories on those days! Here ya go, I really encourage you to try it, you'll fall in love!

Dark Applesauce Fruitcake

Ingredients:

1 c. shortening
2 1/2 c. sugar
3 eggs
2 c. nuts (I use chopped walnuts)
1 box raisins (not the tiny box, the bigger box)
4 1/2c. all purpose flour
1 bottle marachino cherries
2 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. nutmeg
1 tsp. ground cloves
2 tsp. cinamon
1/2 tsp. salt
2 c. applesauce
1 can crushed pineapple
1 tsp. vanilla extract

Preheat oven to 350 degrees

Mix all ingredients well, pour into greased and floured tube or bundt pan
Bake at 350 degrees for 2 hours

your house will have the MOST heavenly smell ever! This recipe also doesn't have all that icky sticky dried fruit, it's just yummy and delicious! Let me know if you make it and if you like it!
