A question for people who have had their surgery

As I prepare my kitchen and pantry for the post-surgical diet (RNY), I would like to know some things from your experience!

1) Was there anything you wish you'd stocked, or stocked more of?
2)  Was anything you got or made not as tasty or useful as you thought it would be?

In other words, what would you have done differently to meet your needs if you had to do it again?

I'm going to suggest that you not go overboard and buy tons of stuff that you like now. You may find that your tastes change after the surgery and your stuff with a bunch of stuff you won't use. The one thing that I wish I had more of at first was jello. I loved it the first two weeks. I mashed it with unflavored protein powder. I know, that sounds gross but it worked for me. I did not use unsalted broth, I had some and ended up adding salt and other flavoring to it. The grocery stores are always there if you find something you like and want more of.

Good luck!

I stocked up on SF jello, SF jello pudding, a SMALL bag of Whey Protein Powder, Ricotta Cheese, and Muscle Milk Light shakes.  By the time I was ready to have pureed foods, I had my DH stock up on cottage cheese and egg beaters. I also stashed some ISOPURE water in my fridge, to bump up protein in the first few weeks. FF Chicken Broth or Beef Broth is also a good idea. Not only nice to sip, but can be used to moisten foods at pureed stage.

After the first couple of weeks, when you go to puree and soft foods, you will have a better idea of what you are "craving". It will be very small amounts, so don't buy bulk for goodness sake!

Good Luck!
Hugs,
Kathy

It doesn't matter whether you're a lion or a gazelle
when the sun comes up you'd better be running.

I'm not RNY, but lap band. But just wanted to offer a suggestion. Instead of broth I used the flavor pack out of ramen noodles. Just mixed it with ho****er and sipped on that. There are so many flavors so you dont get tired of just plain broth. I still drink it when I get a fill.

Thank you so much, everyone, this was the kind of feedback I needed. I, too, have my box of Vitalady samples and right now, they all taste pretty similar when tossed in a blender with skim milk and half a banana, LOL. And when I look at the box, I keep thinking, "do I really need more than that?" But some savory broths sound like a good idea, in case "sweet" doesn't suit my new palate.

If all goes well with my insurance company, I will be going on on Sept. 14.

The one thing I was told was to find a protein drink you like.  Which I did and I had the container at home waiting.

THEN I REALIZED there was a quite a difference in finding a protein drink you like and having it three times a day, every day.  I soon started to get sick the ONE I had found.

Long story short, get a variety of protein flavors you like

LOL, Me too! I'm still trying to find another protein shake other than Isopure Dutch Chocolate. I've ordered samples from quite a few different places, but they just don't taste very good to me.  I can't wait to be able to add milk and other things to my shakes to mix it up.

I must tell you I purchased to much Jello! I still have several boxes 1 yr later as I hate Jello now. I never thought about mixing Ramen noodles seasoning in my broths. Sounds like a good idea cuz I got so sick of broth. Anothing thing I can't stand now. Best of luck! Enjoy your journey! Christine (internetnut)

I wish I had a variety of liquids on hand....like Propel, crystal light, V8, skim milk...but I just send hubby to the store every few days.

ice pops! Sugar free ice pops and fudge cicles got me through some of those early days.

I prefered to make homemade broth - tastes better to me!

Good luck with your surgery!
