Recipes for a Luau anyone??

Im having a luau style party for my mom's 70th birthday party. No special reason, she just likes the flowers so I thought I would decorate with Hawaiian/Luau theme.

Just looking for simple, easy ideas to make as appetizers and side dishes.

We are having burgers, hotdogs and Italian sausages on the grill. I know we are getting a special cake. The flavor will be almond with coconut icing and will have Hawaiian flowers on it.

Thanks for any ideas you have!

Tropical fruit salad with bananas, mango, pineapple, etc?
Hawaiian bread you find in the deli section? Perhaps made into a bowl with seafood dip?

Ohhh, that sounds good. Everyone loves the Hawaiian bread. Seafood dip sounds good.

Of course the fruit salad sounds good too!

Thank you

Fruit ****tail Cheese Ball   Take one can of fruit ****tail ( I use the no sugar added)and one small can of mandarin oranges...Drain the juice...Take a hand held potato masher ( or one of those hand held pastry dough cutters works that you use to cut the shortening and flour together for pie crust) and mash the fruit...Mix in one small box of sugar free vanilla pudding...Mix in 3 packs of softenend lite cream cheese...Form into a ball, will be kinda sloppy to work with...I then chopped up some walnuts ( can use pecans) and spread 1/2 of them out onto a sheet of aluminum foil...Place the cheeseball down on top of the nuts...Sprinkle the rest of the nuts on top and around the sides...     Pineapple Pecan Cheese Ball   2 packs of lite cream cheese 1/2 cup diced green peppers 1/2 cup diced onions 1 can of crushed pineapple ( drain juice) pinch of salt 2 packs of Buddig beef ( sliced) reserve one to roll the cheeseball in 1 cup of chopped pecans ( I used walnuts)   Mix all the ingredients into a ball...Dice up the second pack of beef and lay 1/2 of it on a sheet of foil...Place cheeseball down on the beef...Use remaining beef to cover the top and sides...   For a bigger cheese ball, sometimes I add an extra pack of cream cheese

I did one for my step mom's 50th and we actually did pulled pork it was super easy and cheap if you are not stuck on the burgers and dogs idea. You just put the pork but into a crock pot whole and cover with apple juice. After 8 hours shread with a fork. Serve with steamed rice and pineapple. We had about 50 people and did 4 crock pots worth. Had way too much food in the end. I shread the meat and put it in small aluminum catering trays covered with foil and kept it warm in the oven. It was such a hit. Oh we put out teriaki sauce too.

Also delisious was chocolate covered strawberries.

I loved pulled pork and shredded chicken. I spent 2 hours pulling pork one day for a potluck at work where I took Pulled Pork meat & SF BBQ Sauce. Tons of compliments and I was the only WLS patient there. Anyway thought I would share a quicker way to shred the meat rather than standing there with a couple of forks.

If you put your meat in a bowl or even your crock pot with a lil bit of the juice and use your hand mixer, it will shred the meat in a matter of minutes. This works well on Chicken and Pork, I have yet to try it on other meats. The Chicken took a lil longer but still not even close to half of what 2 forks will take ya.

Just wanted to share. Enjoy your party. :)

Hi MaryB,

This was my favorite food when I was in Hawaii and in the past I found this OH recipe and it was very good. Not sure who's it is but here you go.  Diana

I have Bird's Custard Powder that I bought, so I just used it, but you can use cornstarch instead (becasue that's all it is).

In a medium saucpan heat 2 cups milk (reserve 1 tbsp) to almost boiling.
While this is heating, mix 2 tbsp Custard Powder or cornstarch with the tbsp milk in a bowl until cornstarch dissolves.
Mix 4 pkts of Stevia (powdered) into milk along with 2 tbsp coconut flavored Torani Sugar-Free Syrup.  (You could use coconut extract if you don't have the syrup, and maybe add another pkt of Stevia)  I tasted it after this to make sure the flavor and sweetness were to my liking.
Once milk is almost boiling, slowly whisk in cornstarch mixture and keep whisking, it will thicken a little.  You can add vanilla at this point, but honestly, I forgot to add it.  I love vanilla too...oops!

That's it!  I love it warm with some reduced-fat vanilla wafers crushed over the top.  It would also be awesome with some of my homemade granola that is packed with protein and no sugar.  I also just invested in a case of Kay's Natural's Protein Cereal which I love, so I could crush some of that on top and it would add protein.  Ahhh, the possibilities!

When you refrigerate it, it will thicken a little more and be more of a pudding consistency.  If you want it thicker add more cornstarch, if you want it thinner like a sauce add more milk.

Now I am going to experiment with it to see if I can get some Any Whey protein powder in there and I'm also going to try some different flavors since I have about a billion extracts and 2 billion sugar-free syrups from Torani and Da Vinci.
