I'm interested in buying a dehydrator but I really don't know too much about them. Any suggestions on brands, and prices.  Where to buy them?  I was thinking of drying fruit and possible making some type of Jerky to nibble on at night.  All ideas appreciated.  Thanks.

I have the Nesco Gardenmaster:  http://www.nesco.com/category_449f7f01f1ea/

It works very well and I've done fruits, jerky, herbs, etc.  It isn't much use in the Winter but gets a nice workout in the Spring and Summer months.

I have had several during the years, and you really do get what you pay for.

I currently have

I have also had

Both of these provided excellent service.  I was extremely pleased with both of them.
The excalibur (the black one above lasted for years)
The one on the top is my currenty dehydrator and that thing is quite the machine, it will do several large roasts worth of jerky at a time.

I have also had one of those as seen on tv brand dehydrators, don't waste your time or money on those.  They are night and day different on what you can accomplish.

Good luck

Scott

I just bought a Nesco from Wally World on line http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=1120727 it is only available on line from them. My only wish is that I would have bought it sooner. I have been having a really good time thinking of other foods to dehydrate. I did a pretty good beef jerky. Thanks to a member here on the board that shared a recipe with me. I do have a post http://www.obesityhelp.com/forums/recipe/3839338/Beef-jerky- recipe/ a few down from yours asking for beef jerky recipes.

My unit is so easy to clean, has the dryer and fan on the top lid and is expandable by going up in rings that I can additionally purchase. I have done 4 pineapples (fantastic), apples, oranges, grapes, pitted cherries and the beef jerky. The one thing that is not a fantastic thing on it is that it does not have a thermastat where you can dial in an exact temp, it is just a dial that goes in 10 degree increments. For me this is minor.

You should be able to purchase dehydrators in kitchen departments in the big box stores, on line or at kitchen stores in outlet malls etc.
