The way I do them is a bit different--put pecans in a bowl, mix in 1/2 cup rum or brandy, stir, cover and refrigerate overnight.  The next morning toss them in a mix of Splenda, cinnamon, and a little pepper so that the soggy nut is coated.  Put on a baking sheet on the counter to dry.  The alcohol evaporates and encrusts the nuts in a shell of toppings.  I usually put the nuts on top of the frig so no passing member of my family would quality control them until they were dry.

Spiced Pecans

¼ cup butter

1 ½ tsp ground cumin

¼ tsp cayenne pepper

3 cups pecan halves or walnuts

2 tbs Splenda

1 tsp salt

In a skillet, melt butter. Add the cumin and the cayenne. Cook and stir for 1 minute. Place pecans in a large bowl. Pour butter mixture over nuts. Toss to coat. Add sugar and salt. Toss again. Spread in a single layer on parchment paper lined cookie sheet.

Bake at 325 degrees for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. Good to double.
