What is the difference in the lap band and the realize band. Am looking to have revision but I want to get all my facts in order first. Had RNY in 05 and lost 100 lbs even though dr wanted me to loose 70 because I am tall and big boned. I had some problems with hip replacent a year ago and bad knee looking to have surgery. I need to get the 70 lbs back off before I can exercise and I know that is what is hurting my hip all this weight. It is hard to not gain when you are in the bed so much with pain. But I learned my lesson with the RNY it is not a magic solution and won't do it again, gain the weight after lost. Thanks

I think they are basically the same or very similar just a little different shape with the Realize. However the band is also the least effective WLS so it may not help you at all. If I were you I would research other options before you settled for the band. If it is a "band over bypass" it still takes work some have had good success and others very little. Hopefully someone with actual experience will post for you. Good luck to you!

Not to make it more confusing..but I beg to differ about the comment that the band is the LEAST EFFECTIVE of the WLS. it depends on the person, and how dilligent you are. I had my Realize Band 16 months ago and am almost at goal. I would do it again. I agree that , no matter which surgery you choose, it does take work. They do the surgeries to our stomachs, not our brains. Good luck, whichever you choose. Also, your surgeon could advise you on which surgery would be the best for you.

You can beg to differ all you want but that doesn't change the stats. And no matter what stats you look at, the band ALWAYS comes up at the bottom when comparing WLS's!

While these statistics “may" be true (I ALWAYS question research results because many times they discard certain results to bolster their hypostasis), look at the time line this was conducted: 1990 to 2002.

A lot has changed in 10 years.

Let’s see the stats of a newer/recent comparison, whi*****luds
ALL bariatric operations.

Good Luck on your Journey !!

Tom us "band bashers" are in an akward postion. When we tell our experience about the band we are told it's not typical-post stats. When we post stats, ppl disagree with them or get mad.

Maria,

You should know me, I never have any issues when someone “speaks from the heart with their experiences" when it comes to band issues. I feel this is sooooo important, especially when someone is thinking about it. They need to know it’s not all rainbows and unicorns.

I also have no issues if someone post medical facts when it comes to any of these operations, especially the band.

What I am questioning is THIS chart. (A) the information is obtained from 1990 to 2002. 2002 is 10 years ago, and I think (know) the bariatric world has changed in the last 10 years. IMHO this information is outdated, and may be misleading. It would be like me posting data obtained in the late 80’s – early 90’s about bypass success, when during that time many bypass patients were either failing or dying. (B) In a “previous" life I was a writer, and I helped write-up research articles. I’ve know what goes on “behind the scenes" when it comes to research articles. I’ve seen how certain outcomes are dismissed or omitted, because the data does not reinforce the original theory. So no matter what I see, I always question "how reliable is this information" (both pro and con).

Plus this “chart" only shows band; bypass and d/s. Where is the (updated) quantified data on all other operations, such as: BIB (BioEnterics Intragastric Balloon); Biliopancreatic Diversion; Fobi Pouch; MGB (mini-gastric bypass); VGB (vertical banded gastroplasty); VSG (vertical sleeve gastrectomy) – just to name a few? Once I see the stats of all these operations, then I will be more inclined to say OPERATION Z is best choice, and OPERATION Q is the worst.

Good Luck on your Journey !!

Tom you're probably my favorite cheerleader. I would pop on the Realize forum from time to time and always noticed it was a much more supportive place than the lap-band forum. You do a good job being neutral for the most part.

As far as those stats. That is just one study, but I have never seen ANY study where the band did not come out in LAST place of all the 4 major WLS's. Have you???

It's like the difference between Coke and Pepsi; Honda or Toyota ... Band size, port "shape", port attachment & how it "attaches" is the only difference.

I have been a very successful band person, but will admit it's not easy. As you know, NONE OF THESE operations are 100% success or failures. Each person's results will be different.

Research Research Research before you decide which way to go.

But know no matter what you decide, I will be here to help you

Good Luck on your Journey !!

I had RNY going on 7 yrs. ago.   I have a niece who had lapband 2 yrs ago.   She lost 150 lbs and has kept it off.   ALL the WLS work but as Kim said you have to work them right ....too bad there isn't a "one size fits all" WLS.    I am with Tom...do your research.   I HATE it when people fight about what WLS is the BEST !!!   They are ALL Equal IMHO....you do have to pick to try to pick the best one for your lifestyle and needs.   I researched the band but chose the RNY due to it would be better for my lifestyle.    Good luck to you on your decisions.

Hugs and blessings ~~~ Vivian
