My biggest concern is changing my diet.

What can you eat/drink?  Can you drink wine? any alcohol beverages?

I am trying protien shakes to find the ones i like for post op...any other suggestions to prepare me for surgery?

Thanks!

I was told to stay away from alcohol for one year,  however, I had a non-carbonated fruity alcoholic drink at my sis's wedding 2 weeks ago and I was fine.  (I limited myself to only the one and it took me a while to sip it all down.)

As far as protein shakes go, I like the chocolate Unjury and the chocolate truffle and cappuccino flavored Syntax Nectar ones.  Now that I am almost 4 moths post-op I add 1 Tbs of reduced fat peanut butter to the chocolate ones sometimes or add 1/2 cup of berries to the chocolate and mix it in a blender and it is sooooo yummy.  There are lots to choose from and ways to make them better.  I still do 2 protein shakes a day inbetween meals.

Best of luck on your surgery,
Heather

My understanding is that the main reason for eliminating caffeine is that it is a diuretic and can contribute to dehydration. I'm one of the lucky ones that experiences no symptoms from caffeine withdrawal so I had no problem giving up my morning coffee. About 3 months post-op I started making coffee again but I limit myself to 1 large (12-ounce) cup. Some days I even forget to make it.

To make the withdrawal easier you might consider mixing some decaf in. Each day increase the amount of decaf and decrease the amount of hi-test. I really found that I didn't miss the morning coffee. Having a chocolate protein shake each day tasted a lot better than coffee anyway!

Get the unjury sample pack (go to unjury.com) it is about $20 and will give you samples of all their flavors; I really like the chocolate one and the strawbery mixed with lemonade...but serve them COLD or the smell will getcha.

Also, Isopure dirnks--alpine punch is the best, I think. You can get those at Vitamin Shoppe...they are about $4each but I lived on them for 2weeks post-op.

Alcohol--I had a drink 1 month post-op bc it was my anniversary. I was fine. I have a drink every few weeks (not every day!!) and it is fine.

Caffeine--I have had TWO coffees total since surgery, both in the last week. I can feel it in a major way. You wont want caffeine for a while after surgery bc it is a stimulant and your body (esp your heart) is already under a lot of pressure from the drastic cut in calories and weight loss. Trust me on this; I spent a night in the hospital 10days post op bc my my heart was having trouble adjusting to the sudden drop in weight.

You will be able to eat just about anything by 3 months out; I avoid breads and raw veggies still bc they could get stuck, but I also have NO craving or desire for them. Seriously, the things you can't have you wont miss.

I have found that my menu is mainly cheeses, protein shakes, and soft foods (yogurt, pudding, egg salad). I can eat really good steak and shrimp, but chicken and ground meats don't always sit well. No pastas or rice, and I don't miss them at all.

I really like the Unjury Chocolate and I get 2 canisters automatic delivery each month. I put a frozen banana in my morning shake = yummy :) I also really like BSN's Syntha-5 choc fudge, choc peanut butter, choc mint and mochichino. I really enjoy my shakes.

I use toddler spoons to control my portion size in my mouth, and also use very small bowls/plates for portion control. My eyes are definately bigger than my pouch...and my pouch always wins.

Love my "Bullet" blender too.

Niki,

I would strongly suggest speaking to your Doctor and/or Nutritionists concerning what to eat/drink. Each Doctor have their own philosophy what to drink.

As for protein shakes, SAMPLE A LOT - because some taste like sweat-sock juice

Finally, other suggestion - expect to feel a lots of highs and lows and questions and doubts before and after surgery. But know (A) it all works out (B) we're here for you !!

Good Luck on your Journey !!

Tom
