When does the nausea go away?

I had surgery on Tuesday and came home Wednesday...didn't feel nauseas at all until a little bit Friday, then again Saturday and now, Sunday.

It seems to be whenever I try to drink the isopure drinks--which were going down just fine until Friday. I also feel nauseas after having some diluted apple juice.  This morning I haven't had anything bu****er and I still feel nauseas.

Is this normal? I've been taking an anti-nausea medicine as soon as I feel "sick" and haven't actually had anything come up yet...

I had thought that since I didn't feel nauseas from the get-go that I wouldn't go through this...boy was I wrong! Any insights, thoughts, or stories about dealing with this would be much appreciated.
Thanks!!!

I was sick imediately after surgery for 4 days...the first day was bad but each day after that got better.  I noticed that any sugar made me feel sick...try some diet green tea, this helped me.  I could not do juice even diluted ones the natural sugar just make me sick.  I was asking my mom about this (she is a nurse) and confirmed that sugar will make you nauseas especially when you have nothing in your stomach.  So sorry your having a tuff time!  I was banded 9 April & am just starting to feel normal again.  I have been very weak...

I was banded last Monday, and got was feeling fine until Saturday night. Until then I was going fine and slowly building up on getting my full fluids and protein. I sipped a little gatorade and it passed in a few hours, but boy was it rough!
I have a hard time with the Isopure because it makes me feel like my throat is coated and thick. I have to drink it in small doses.
I hope you are feeling better soon.

Nancy--how are you feeling now?? I hope you are doing better!

I was really surprised that I got nauseas so many days AFTER surgery when everything had been smooth-sailing until then...I guess I thought if I wasn't nauseas from the start I wasn't going to get nauseas in recovery.

hope you are feeling better!! This morning I feel OK but the day is young...;)

Nausea sometimes occur, even days later. It could be the gases (both the anesthesia and/or the gas the use to inflate your insides).

However it could also be a sign of not taking enough fluids in. Are you hitting your recommended liquid allotment (most Doctors agree on 64 ounces)?

Also it could be psychosomatic, and maybe you don't really like the Isopure drinks. Have you tried another protein supplement and see what happens.

Good Luck on your Journey !!

Hey Tom! Thanks so much for your thoughts!!

You mean the nausea could be because I'd rather be drinking full liquids and eating solid foods and subconsciously hate the isopure? :) I'm on a clear liquid diet--still--until Thursday.  So until then I'm pretty much stuck with the isopure...which I actually don't mind; I have a bunch of flavors and I think they are ok...it is only every once in a while that I feel nauseas after taking a drink. But I also get nauseas after just drinking H20 or diluted juice...it really seems to have a mind of its own...

How do the gases make us nauseas? Even this many days post-op? Tell me everything you know! :)

I'm working very hard to get all the liquids in--but if I wasn't feeling nauseas I think I could get more in. What a vicious cycle that can be, hu?

Just an FYI, Isopure was a very acquired taste for me.  It took me at least 3 weeks to actually not mind the taste and the chalky feeling you can get.  Try Cytosport, you can get it at GNC and it's got the same basic stats as Isopure.  Don't try the Tropical flavor.. tastes like monkey's butt.  The Watermelon and Tangerine flavors are great though, IMHO.

Unfortunately I didn't have liquid diet requirements for long post op... maybe broth would help?

 I've been taking broth, too...:)

Isopure actually doesn't have a chalky taste to me...not before surgery, either, which is why I got it. The taste doesn't bug me....its just that, like, once ever 12 drinks of it or so I feel queezy...but the same is true for everything else I'm trying to take  in, too....

Let's see if I can clarify myself.

It is possible that you are nausea because you aren't drinking enough. While each Doctor is different, the recommendation is 64 ounces of fluids (non carbonate, decaffeinate liquids). You may need more than 64 ounces. I know I did. If you're getting that amount, it could be the reason.

Isopure -- I know I could not tolerate Isopure, but was able to drink other stuff. You may want to look into another Protein based product - and try to make it a WHEY protein based product. Again as with everything - ASK YOUR DOCTOR FIRST BEFORE MAKING ANY CHANGES.

Yes the gases can make you nauseas especially the anesthesia. Some folks have a bad time with that. Remember gases takes take to escape. Some people have been known to have shoulder pains for weeks after an operation because the "gases" are trying to escape.
Good Luck on your Journey !!

Thanks Tom! You are the best! You always have really good points. I appreciate that.

I'm going to talk to the doc and see if I can get an Rx for those anti-nausea ear patches...since I didn't have any nausea for several days after surgery, I think those patches take the credit...:)
