I am keeping my surgery private, and not discussing it with anyone other than DH,my mom, boss,  and 2 friends that don't live nearby.

Suddenly,  my friends are calling for "Mom's Night Out" etc etc to go out for dinner w/out the kids.  Right now I am just telling everyone that my calendar is booked, but at some point 'Im going to have to make time to do this.

How soon after surgery did you go out, and what did you eat?  What do you tell people when you obviously aren't able to eat "normal" portions....or at least what was normal for me.

Thanks :)

PS - my surgery is scheduled for this Tuesday, so I am at the very beginning of my WLS journey.

Don't be scared! It's ok.....

The first time I went out after my surgery was about a month. I was able to eat all foods, and had been eating them for a few weeks, so I kindof knew what I could tolerate. I just made sure I ate slowly, chewed, chewed, chewed the heck out of the food!! We even brought a stop watch to make sure I waited one minute in between bites.

When eating out with people who don't know you've had surgery, just tell them, you're trying to eat healthier, watching your portion sizes or you're just full. If people get pushy and continue saying things, just tell them to mind their own biz!!!! LOL

Good luck next week....keep us posted!!! Congrats on making the best decision to gain your life back!!!!

You'll be fine. I have done like you, and have only told a few people.  If you go out early into your surgery, just choose a bowl of soup or chili.  I just told people I was trying to eat low carb, so I wouldn't eat the bread on a sandwich, or just get a chicken breast or something like that.  Going out to eat will be done easily.  You'll be surprised!
