WHAT TO TELL KIDS

I was honest with my kids about my procedure. I even showed my almost 8 year old a diagram about the band.  She was so sweet.  She told me that I was the way God made me and she loved my soft lap and I should not change.

They understand that I cannot eat the things I used to.

I say go for honesty.  We tell our kids not to lie, so don't lie to them.

Tell them that the surgery will help you lose weight to be healthy.

That's so cute about your daughter.  Very sweet.

I remember earlier this year (pre- any weight loss) my daughter like poked my belly and was like "what is all that?" and I'm like OMG inside and am all casual "oh, my belly?" and she's like "all of that?".  Real nice huh?  She's only 4 and it was very innocent and so she don't even know how that made me feel but it made me very aware that she was maybe noticing stuff like that.  Makes me more thankful yet I have done this.  :)

Hi,
I just got my band and have kids about the same age (7 and 9). My nine year old son is on the heavier side and takes after me and my daughter who is 7 is thin (and frankly I don't know who she takes after!).

I was honest with them. I thought it was important that they knew that eating right and exercising is very imporant. that they need to start at their age doing this or else they could end up having to take a very serious (surgery) action to get their weight in control. With my son, I even showed him a picture of the procedure and what exactly was going to happen to me (i showed him after the surgery not before as I didn't want to freak him out before I went in.)

I also wanted them to know that I am doing this for health reasons, not because I will look better. And I stressed this with them and talked about how I needed to do the surgery so that I could stay healthy and be able to play with them and be there for them and that if I didn't do it I was very concerned I would end up like their grandfather (even more morbidly obese than I and barely able to walk.)

I was vaguer with my seven year old because she was younger. But my 10 year old could probably pass the text they give before surgery.

Whether what I did was right, I have no idea. Only time will tell...
