Having a little trouble

Hello everyone,

I was banded on 10/22.  I'm still very very sore, but I would not say I'm in pain.  Did anyone else experience soreness/discomfort after surgery?

Also, I'm on my liquid diet and having trouble getting in my water and protein everyday.  I'm just not in the mood to consume anything.  Anyone else deal with this and how did you get through it?

I remember thinking I'd never drink again.  :)  It will get easier.  The best thing I did was stop taking the pain meds and switched to tylenol, and got up and moving and walked a little bit a couple times a day.  I remember reading that and thinking "that can't really help" but it really does.

Also, you JUST had surgery so of course your sore.  I was the same and my husband had to keep reminding me that too.

Hope your feeling better soon.  It really does get better with each new day.  :D

I was sore for a couple of days, but made myself get up and walk around the house as much as possible. As for the protein....drink it. I didn't feel like it at all, but it really helped in the beginning.  Just sit down and force yourself to get through it. I was drinking Isopure, so drank two a day until I could get some protein from diet.  I just kept drinking all the time....water, water, water and running running running to pee! That was great exercise, up and down the stairs all day long! Some days you will get it all in and some days you won't. Just do your best.

I never took the pain meds. I took liquid tylenol PM at night to go to sleep and not worry about the soreness. After a few days I didn't need that anymore either. At three weeks post-op I was back to sleeping on my tummy.

I was just banded 10/16 and I still have soreness around the port site incision.  I imagine that will take several weeks to heal but it gets better everyday.

In the beginning I was having trouble drinking all the water too...so I add  Crystal Light Singles to each and I seem to be able to drink more each day.  The Peach Tea is SO good...and if you purchase the store brand Crystal Light like drinks its alot cheaper and they are just as good.

I bought Unjury Protein Powder (www.unjury.com) and added that to just about everything I put in my mouth. They have an unflavored, chocolate, strawberry and a chicken soup flavor that is great to add to soup.  They even sell sample packs so you try them out before you buy a whole canister.

I am now working on getting my calories up.  I have been getting between 600-800 a day.  My Dr. says he wants me up to 1100 a day.  That is going to be difficult for me since I have not felt hungry one time since my surgery, but I will get there!!  I'm determined.
Best wishes to you!!

My mantra:  Each day is an new opportunity to be happier, healthier and better than the day before.  I will live each day with enthusiam and be thankful for the many blessings that surround me. I will do my best to pay it forward whenever possible

Everyone is different when it comes to healing. For me I was in little to relatively no pain. For the first 2 – 3 days the only pain I felt was as if I did 500 sit-ups. Also my throat was raw, and it took me about a week to realize it was because of the incubation tub (which helped be breathed).

I too had to ‘force myself to eat’. I stil have the issue to this day. I don’t get hungry (unless I don’t follow the rules).

My advice is make sure you eat (and for those who are reading this, and don’t feel full yet - every Doctor is different, so before you up or change your in-take check with them ... with that said, here is a list of things you should (could) be having:

Of course your 64 ounces of water. - My advice, take a "sip" (mouth full) every 10 minutes. It will keep you full and hydrated

Ice Chips
Low-fat broth
Sugar-free Jello
Sugar-free juices (ie. Crystal Light)
Non-carbonated flavored waters
unsweetened decaffeinated ice tea
sugar-free popsicles

remember - the above list is all considered 'water' - so you can have as much as you like (again, check with your Doctor).

Skim milk (Skim Plus)
Vegetable juice (ex V-8 and/or tomato)
Low-fat cream soup (made with skim milk)
light smooth yogurt
light fat-free/sugar free ricotta
sugar-free/fat-free puddings (made with skim milk)
Apple sauce (natural - sugar free - no chunks)
whipped low fat cottage cheese

remember - these have calories - so eat until full (not stuffed).

Finally PROTEIN DRINK made with skim milk.

Please make sure you are getting your 60 to 80 grams of protein in per day. Protein will keep you full.

Good luck, and know I am here if you need

Good Luck on your Journey !!

Tom
