Does the gas subside over time?
I had my surgery February 9th, and the air from the surgery has subsided, but now I have this constant need to burp and or pass gas. It gets worse after eating or drinking lots of fluids. So my question is... doest it go away? or at least does this ease over time? or should I just prepare to get used to it for the rest of my life? A couple of things that should be noted I am still using benefiber as I am only 3 weeks post op, and want to keep things moving, does this affect things? I have also tried using gas-x and such products and they dont seem to do much.... Any advice or experiences would be much appreciated!
i can almost guarantee that the reason you are having problems is from you benefiber. I was told everything I eat needs to be low sugar and low fiber. You're going to stay regular because you're hardly eating anything, so it's not like you can get all blocked up right now. I would stop taking that stuff right away. After my gas pain subsided I had very little gas, and I watched my fiber very closely. Hope this helps.

I agree about the fiber. GasX strips are a big help. I know first hand how much burping hurts!
As you feel better and can walk more - the gas will decrease I think. Walking always helps
with gas. Do you really need the benefiber? I have not taken anything like that - we eat so little
that there is not much coming out - right? Turkey chili will keep you regular and the gas is
short lived. Plus if you eat if often enough - you don't have much gas. Just a thought.
Well I have eased off the dose of benefiber, but yes I really have needed to be on it because the first 2.5 weeks after surgery I was having a lot of issues with things not moving, and it was causing a great deal of pain for me. Things are just now feeling like they are normalizing in that department, and actually my doctors and bariatric nutritionist both recomended that I make sure that I was getting fiber in. So I am not sure exactly what to think, I eat roughly every 3-3.5 hours, 3 meals and 1-2 protein snacks but the burping is just getting to be completely annoying and can be painful at times. I experience the majority of the burping after meals and it last for an hour or so. I guess I am just trying to figure out if its something that is just my body settling into everything, and will ease over time or if I am just gonna have to learn to deal with it.
Well, I had surgery 8 months ago and my gas is just as bad as it was 8 months ago. Sometimes, it is unbearable. Initially, I had problems with burping, but for the last 5 months or so, it has been flatulence that has been the problem. I use my diet as prescribed, but I guess this is one of the tradeoffs for better health and lower weight. I use GasX strips, but I'm not convinced that they help.
Good luck!

I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.
I had the lap band on 10-10-08. I take Benefiber every morning because I have trouble getting my bowels to move. My surgeon told me that I could take it. I didn't take it until he told me I could. I still have lots of flatulence but I have never burp to where it hurt. The gas has got better over time even though I still have it. I can live with the gas as long as I cotinue to lose weight.
Good luck and God Bless.
