Protein Question
I haven't had my band surgery yet...I hope to in March/April. I have a stupid question. Where do you order/buy your protein powder, shakes, etc from? Online? Wal-mart? GNC? Anything in particular I am suppose to look for? What are your favorites? I'm just trying to get an idea and I thought about going ahead and trying to incorporate it into my diet now. Thanks for your help!

Hi Kelly, you can buy it many places. GNC, Wal-Mart, Health food stores, Whole Foods, on-line....the key is (and your nutritionist should/will tell you the same) to buy Whey Isolate (not just "whey"). The isolate is better metabolized and used more efficiently for maintianing muscle mass and key protein stores (muscle is easier for the body to burn when losing weight than fat is and if there is a ready supply of protein to KEEP muscle mass...and hair as well, then your body turns to burning fat instead.) For many people who can't tolerate dairy/wheat products, soy protein can be used but it is not as effective as the whey isolates. Unjury, EAS, Nectar and many other different brands are out there-but count on spending about $28.00 for a month (30 scoops) supply. Also, make sure it is low carb/no sugar. The label should read something like: cal per scoop: 90-110; Fat: 0...Carbs: 0-4 and Protein: 20-25.
I use Nectar because it blends easier and comes in more flavors than just the traditional choc, vanilla and strawberry and I order it from Supplementwarehouse.com.
Oh....and all proteins do have a "wang" to them (protein taste), that you get used to after awhile and learn to mask with other things.
And increasing your protein in your diet when you are not used to it can change your bowel patterns/cause gas as well....just to warn you.
Might not be a bad idea to start playing with some now and see what you like.

i use bodybuilding.com only because what ever you want. nectar is good, so is isopure zero carb. i just got so sick and tired of the fruit flavors, also with isopure and nectar the consistency is water. i now use muscle milk light, it is a thicker shake and the flavors are awesome. they are thick enough that when i use them a meal substitute i keeps me full for hours.
LOL, I was just the opposite! I got so sick of the "shake flavors" and consistency (I was a body builder for years) I wanted something watery and fruity! Using all the protein and skim milk together for so many years made me a little lactose intolerant so the whey and milk combined tends to be not so kind on my GI tract.
