I have a question, I am having lap band surgery on Dec. 10th.  I am still not sure if I am going to have the lap band or realize band yet.  I have been told that the Dr. and I will decide that before surgery.  I am reading through the Pre-Surgery diet and I have some questions.  The paper that I am reading says that I have to have 1 protein supplement for my 1st meal and my second meal.  Then for my 3rd meal I am supposed to have 4-6 oz lean meat with non-starchy vegetables.  What are non-starchy vegetables?????????
I am also supposed to get 64 ozs of low calorie beverages, what does that mean?  Am I allowed to drink cokes, milk, and orange juice?  I can have a light snack in between meals, does the protein shakes really fill you up?  I can have a cup of light yogurt, 1 piece of fruit, non-starchy vegetables, 1/2 cup of cottage cheese, 1-2 oz low fat cheese, and 1/2 lunchmeat sandwich.  Does anyone have any suggestions for these?  Why do I have to do this diet?  I still have to meet with the nurse case management appt.  I think that I just sign forms for this appt.......I need some help....

Hey there i was banded on Nov. 7 i will try and answer what I can, non starchy veggies are broccoli, spinach,  mostly the green stuff. The low calorie bev is really water and crystal lite or sugar free cranberry, no cokes milk has to be skim or fat free, orange juice i'm not sure. The protein shakes do fill you up once you drink just find something to occupy your time till you next meal.  I didn't have to a diet before surgery just one day of liquids the day before surgery. You will be back on that phase around your 3rd or 4th week post op, so maybe it will be good for you. I wish you well and a speedy recovery and I'll see you on the losing side. God Bless

I was told to lose 12.5 lbs before surgery and I had 3 months to do it.  About 2 months before surgery I started on the diet you've been told to follow.  I lost 18 lbs before my surgery.  I found the protein shakes really did fill me up.  I didn't obsess over the whole thing, basically I had 2 protein shake/meals a day and one "regular" (but healthy) meal a day.  Starchy vegies are things like potatoes.  Stick to the green stuff.  No caffeine, no carbonated drinks.  No sugary drinks (diet stuff like Crystal Light or just plain water is best).  I'm 12 days post-op now, and found some of the habits I built up during those weeks have helped me a lot.
