Confused Newbie
I recently made the decision of having WLS after months of battling the idea. Two words during the seminar I attended made my decision for me. Restrictive (lab/realize band) and malabsorption (all the other techniques). I want a tool that restricts my intake but not prevents my body from using the nutrients I give it. I also didnt like the idea of surgically rerouting my digestive system. Banding has some drawbacks as well, like the slipping and possible erosion but those risks are low. For me, it presented with the most positives so I went with being banded. I chose the Realize band simply because the size of the port.....I liked that it had a lower profile over the lap band.
Best wishes to you!

Thank You All so much for the advice. U all have been so insightful. I am having problems with the rerouting of my insides and the cutting of my stomach as well. Malabsorption, dumping and the vitamins everyday are not to good sounding to me either. The surgeon I am leaning towards stated that he prefers realize as well. I will continue to research and let you all know what happens. Yes I am a praying person and I will take this decision in prayer. It really is like buying a car...lol...(RESPONDING TO ALL)
HI. I just got home from having my Realize band put in last Wednesday. I had wanted to have a bypass but the doctor up here in Canada felt I would do better with a band due to my age and a few other things like previous surgeries. I have had a gall bladder out and a total hysterectomy. He told me after the surgeryt this week that he wouldn't have been able to do the bypass due to all the adhesions from my other surgeries. As it was he had a hard time geting the band in and I have 8 holes in my belly rather than four and was in surgery for over two hours. But here I am at home and I geel not tooo bad....so now I can get on with this business of losing weight. Good luck in your decision. Eydie
Hi Roxy, Yes...you are right-it is a VERY personal decision. I chose LB over RNY because I have seen too many people I know eat their way back from RNY. Yes, pouch stretching and adaptation IS a possibility of LB just like RNY...however there are fewer checks and balances for me (in my mind) with RNY. RNY gives faster weight loss, but LB allows adaption to find the right fit. With RNY, dumping syndrome due to carbs can be undone by those that choose to eat through it and their bodies will accommodate eventually and wall-a...weight back ON. Also just, as a nurse, in my heart believe smaller portions and right food intake vs. surgically created malabsorption is better in the long run for anyone's body. I didn't get overweight because I absorbed it wrong, I got overweight because I ate too much for the wrong reasons. I have to learn to work through my head hunger hunger...not re-route it. Also, a band can be removed/released if it must. I went back to work 4 days after my LB and I also knew that was not an option with RNY. My choice, and my reasons...you need to make your choices for yours and your doctor's reasons...Good Luck
