i had a realize band placed on sept 29th at uva. went for a check up 1 1/2 weeks ago and they told me that they would call me in 2 weeks for an appointment for a fill.  well they called and left a message on my answering machine that i had an appointment for a fill tuesday (tommorror) at 1030 for a fill. i have no idea whether there is a prep or whether i need to not eat before my fill and i cannot get in touch with anyone up there for info. please advise....

I haven't had a fill yet, but am scheduled for my first on 10/28.

I was told 'NPO' after midnight (no food/drink after midnight - including water).  Your surgeon might be different, but that's what I was told.

I have read that most Drs want us on liquids before and after our fills. I would error on that side and just have something liquid in the morning and then see what they tell you after that. To my knowledge, that is the only thing you need to do differently. I get my first fill next Tuesday. Good luck!!

My band was placed on June 25th and I've 4 fills....my physician insists on liquid diet for the entire day of the fill....before and after.
If It's not a drill...you will get local anasthetic to numb the area and a few ccs of saline...remember you band is now empty and you won't be restricted after your first fill...don't be disappointed.....it takes time.  Hope this helps...I will check back later tonight just in case you have more questions you want to leave.

Good luck.

thank you so much for the reply. i am really nervous about tommorrow. they told me a week and a hal*****hat i would get 2ccs the first time. i am kinda of disappointed that that is all. but slow and steady wins the race.

ur sure right.....like me, you won't miss what slow n steady is going to prevent because you won't suffer the reflux and inability to swallow your own spit.  My friend uses another doc and woke up to a wet pillow case because of the spit problem...how tight is her band?!!!  She got pneumonia before the unfill was forced.

Good luck!  Don't be nervous, it's a quick process and the worst part is the local anasthetic to deaden the skin.  Quick sting and it's over.  You're gonna do great.  I'm gonna add you to my friends so we can keep up.  I'm just baby steps ahead of you and hopefully can be of some use.

I had my first fill about 2 weeks ago, no problems.  The worst part was the shot to deaden the area, quick little sting and it was over.  My doc did my fill under flouro so he could see better what was going on, he really only used it to locate the port after that it was just like the normal fills.  I drank a little barium, he added some saline, I drank a little more, added a little more, took another sip and so on, wound up eventually at 3.5cc's.  I seem to have a pretty good restriction happening so I am happy.

Be nervous, its normal, but you have nothing to be afraid of, it will be a snap.

I had my realize band place of Sept 29th at Martha Jefferson.  I had my check up a week ago but have to wait a month for my 2nd checkup and then he wasn't sure he would do a fill.  I wish he would as I am getting hungry now and know it takes a couple of fills for restriction usually.

All doctors are different.  I've  eaten at 8AM ( the food is out of the pouch by then) before my 10AM fill appointment. After the fill I usually eat soft foods for 1-2 meals then back to regular. My doctor doesn't require liquids after a fill. I haven't had any problems. Just remember to chew well and take smaller bites.
