I am scheduled for surgery on the 24th and having 2nd and 3rd thoughts.........I haven't seen my Dr. since chosing the realize band ( I had wanted VSG and insurance denied) so told surgery scheduler to get approval for the band. Went in for my pre-op visit and saw a nurse fill-in, so still no option to question...  Anyway, you guys prob have all the info anyway...

1. What percentage of people develop problems from the band? (reflux, erosions, slippage, etc)
2. If you have probs, are they noramally during first year or at any time after?
3. I travel abroad alot..do you think this is safe to be out of country for 2-4 wks at a time?
4. After you have had the band for awhile and on full diet, do you find your food choices are plenty, it's mostly just the portion size that is restricited?
5. Are there people out there who have had the band for 20 yrs and they are still doing fine and happy with decision?
6. Do the fills hurt?

Think thats it for now....i would really appreciate your input. I am getting nervous and wondering if I should cancel surgery!!!

I have had Realize Band for 7 months.  I have had no problems, as long as I follow the rules.  Having the band is like getting to know a new perspective in your life.  You learn what it will tolerate and what it won't.  Unless you want to punish yourself, you abide by the rules.  I am very happy with my band, and believe that my surgeon, and the software with the Realize Band has promoted my success.

I do have my band yet, but I thought I would answer based on my own research

1. Very few have problems.  About 1 in 500 nationally from what I have read.  Gnerally, there are muh lower risk of complications with a band vs RNY.  These differ by surgeon. Ask your surgeon what his/her percentages are for risks.

2.Normally problems are right after surgery.  But problems can happen at anytime.  The chances are very small.

3. I don't see why it would be an issue with being out of country except for diet issues.  I find that it easier to eat healthy when traveling outside of the US anyways because there is more vegtables and fruits in the diet.  While the port on the band does contain metal, it does not generally set of metal dectectors.  You will be given a card as well to take with you while you travel.

4. It all depends on the person.  Some people have told me they cannot eat much bread or pasta, others say they can eat mostly everything they want to.

5. I don't know.

6. I have not had anyone reporting pain with fills, although some have issues with finding the port.
