Just saw this - thank you so much, Debbie! :) Really glad you had such great pregnancies post-op at those ages! Makes me feel better. :)
I am 31 years old, 13 months post OP, down 164lbs and I am 13 weeks pregnant. The pregnancy test pick up HCG, the pregnancy hormone! Prenatal vitamins will not cause you to have a false positive, sounds like you are pregnant! congrats! As far as eating and the fear of gaining weight, I have that too. I have continued to eat small meals and lose weight, I am not at goal so this is OK with my doctors, they have assured me my baby will be fine. Keep taking your prenatal vitamins along with anything else you take daily. Best of luck to you!
Hello all,
Wow it has been ages since I last graced these pages. I'll update my profile soon with pictures, etc. I'm 5 years post-op. I've lost 220 pounds, 35 years old and just took two pregnancy tests EPT & Clearblue and they both read "Pregnant". I have requested a doctors appointment to confirm if this is true but wanted to ask if taking prenatal daily vitamins could alter the results in any way? My fiance is extremely excited but, I on the other hand is a nervous wreck. I'm having slight anxiety about this as I've worked hard to loose this weight and fear that I may gain it all back or even worse have complications. Right now I can't eat much of anything due to nerves but, just need assurance that if I am in fact preggers that all will be well. Are there any other 35+ ladies pregnant? If so, how are things going for you?
Thanks in advance,
Yes. In my experience, it is the new normal. I'm 4 years post-op RNY and currently 17 weeks pregnant with my third baby. My two boys were both born prior to my RNY and while I had morning sickness, it was NOTHING like this time around. It may be that the HCG levels are higher and I'm having a girl (don't know yet), but I also can't help but think that the surgery played a role as well. I was terribly sick from 6 weeks on and took Zofran nonstop through week 14. In the past few weeks, it has gotten A LOT better though. I'm down to only taking Zofran as needed, which is now just a few times each week. Morning (aka all-the-time) sickness is terrible. Going through it, it seemed like it will never end, but for me, it did get better at 14 weeks and continues to improve. Hopefully you will feel better soon!
I had my 6 month follow up with the bariatric clinic yesterday. I saw a nurse, then NP with a student. I told the nurse taking my vitals that I was almost 8w pregnant and she notified the NP before he came into the room.
He walked in, congratulated me on the 100 pound loss, and then congratulated me on the baby. I told him I was nervous about it and we weren't planning on this for a while - He said "while this may not be ideal timing, things happen for a reason, and 5 years from now, you might be happy this baby came sooner than you planned."
He never scolded me...just went right into the pregnant after WLS info including a packet the bariatrician wrote up with instructions for me and my OB in each trimester - what blood panels to get done, when to do the gestational diabetes test, suggested dietary changes for me and weight gain "allowances". My OB and WLS are at 2 different hospital systems, so I can get my blood work done at either one and just make sure the records get shared.
I go back to the WL doc in 3 months and 6 months, I have a dietician appointment in 2 months, plus all the OB stuff. I should be well taken care of.
As far as dietary stuff...adding snacks between my 3 meals is enough. He said I should feel satisfied and don't need to go hungry - but I don't need to intentionally aim for a certain calorie amount either. He wants me to try to get my meals closer to 1/2 cup in volume too (for loose stuff like cottage cheese or yogurt). I was advised to keep my gain in the 10-15 pound range. I gained 25 and lost it all by 6weeks post partum with my first 2 kids - so I am not going to stress about weight at all right now. So far I am still slowly losing.
I have fasting (and no vits for 24hours) blood work tomorrow to check my levels, so I will get specific vitamin instructions next week.

Hello! I had RNY almost 3 years ago. I have an 8 month old who I have exclusively breastfed and plan on to breastfeed for a long time. I gained 30 pounds during pregnancy and havent lost any of it! I eat all the time to keep up with the calorie demands. My DD is a slow gainer still. Sh is 14 lb. 11 oz at 8 months.
I feel like the gastric bypass has changed my milk composition. Manly friends who breast feed and I see there frozen milk/fresh pumped milk looks WAY more fatty then my milk. There have been no studies on it but I really feel that my milk has less fat, etc then normal and that contributes to her low weight gain.
Reach out if you want to talk more!
That is why I had RNY. I had such severe PCOS, I was gaining even eating properly and couldn't get pregnant. What little fertility treatments we tried didn't work either. My Dr gave me the ok to try now even though I am only 3 months out. I am getting enough nutrition she felt it was ok, plus I can't take any birth control at all (it actually makes PCOS worse, they have found it causes fertility issues, and I have a brain disease that it effects as well). There are tests your gyno can run now to determine your hormone levels and how many eggs you have left, and that kind of stuff. You may be waiting, but it would be good to know what you are working with, and they can monitor it over the time you are waiting just to see what your body is doing. I would also start tracking your cycles just so when the times come for you to try you are armed with the knowledge of how your body is working.
We have been trying for two heartbreaking years, everyone around us is pregnant to the point I am thinking of skipping out on Family Christmas because all those new babies are just too much for me, and my husband's family just doesn't get it. It may take you longer because of your age, but don't give up hope, besides I heard that we are supposed to be the most fertile right after WLS.
I was 38 and then 40 when I had my 2 babies post op. Both were very healthy. I only gained 2 pounds with my 2nd one. I was 320 pounds pre-op, and had lost 130 pounds. I had very good pregnancys with both babies. My kids are now 7 and 5 and are awesome. Wouldn't trade it for the world!!!!

Thanks for your response. Congrats to you as well. Looks like we are pretty much in the same boat. So far no sickness,(knock on wood), I had it the whole pregnancy with my daughter. My doctors don't seem to concern with pregnacy so soon I do know I will be monitored a little more often though. I can deal with it as long as the child and I are both week. Best wishes and GOD bless you too 😃❤️
I am 6 months post VSG and 7.5w pregnant. obviously not planned either. my all-day sickness is bearable if I keep food in my stomach. I've gotten the weight loss to slow down a lot so that should help the baby grow well. vitamins make me worse, so I switched to a gummy prenatal with food and will take the extra iron at bedtime since gummies don't have iron.
I see my WLS clinic this week and my OB next week. I know for sure I will have vitamin levels monitored and will see the high risk doc for growth ultrasounds on baby in 3rd trimester.
Congratulations on your little surprise. I hope everything goes smoothly for you and you have a healthy little babe in your arms in the spring.
