Topic: RE: Post op pregnancy questions

I realize this post is not super new but thought I would put in my experience anyways.

I am about 5 years post op (lost count) and 9 months pregnant.
I took out my iud a year and a half ago or so and we got pregnant fairly quickly but lost that pregnancy at about 12 weeks. I gained alot of weight after that one (20lbs) with all the emotional eating and didn;t lose the weight before trying again.

It took almost a year for my body to recover from that pregnancy before we were successful again. So now I am 9 months along and have gained 30 lbs so far. I haven't had any complications with this pregnancy beyond my lymphedema acting up which happened with my Pre-surgery pregnancies as well so nothing to do with the bypass.

Challenges are cravings though - I wasn't gaining any weight at the start so I mentally gave myself a free pass to eat poorly just to try to pack on some pounds for baby which is a terrible thing to do.

Body image is an issue - I still weigh less than my highest weight and feel more just fat than pregnant. Which makes me sad and then I eat like crap and the cycle continues.
Everything is always a mental game.

Talk to your doctor and make sure you are mentally strong before you try for a baby because every day is a struggle with food when your emotions are heightened and you only want to eat comfort food because you feel so yucky. Pregnancy sucks. It's hard! It makes you feel like crap so be ready.

Given what I know of you and your behavior from OH, I would not trust you to watch a child.

Eighty is probably the ideal time to have a child .. and im sure future generations will be having kids then.

But now, in my stage of life having kids requires sacrifice . That's a very hard choice considering all the opportunities I lost.

You need to get your own head on straight before you even CONSIDER raising a child.

First of all, congrats on your pregnancy!! I had my RNY surgery in Nov 2001. I got pregnant very easily prior, but to no avail, none came to fruition. After my surgery, was successful in maintaining my pregnancy, but just like you, from finding out to the actual 1st appt, I was unable to eat my normal meals and couldn't keep a thing down either. My doctor had experience with previous weight loss patients, and said that although I may not be able to, try to eat meals focusing on the protein and veges first. But if I wasn't able to do that, he asked that I go back on my protein shakes, even if I had to water them down more and sip all day long to ingest at the minimum 60g of protein.

I followed his advice, also put in a call to my surgeon who agreed, and although I unhealthily gained only 14lbs during the whole pregnancy, I now have a beautiful and intelligent 13 year old.

My body taught me a lot when I was pregnant...if my baby and body wanted it, then try it, even milk I couldn't do and still can't to this day, I would chug straight Vitamin D whole Milk from the jug, and never got sick, after I had him, that lasted 2 days, and headed back to lactose free land...

Hang in there, the outcome is well worth it, just don't expect to not get sick, but keep moving forward as much as you can on protein, even if you throw up, some will get to where it needs to go!!!

Good luck!

I think this only applies to taking birth control orally - due to malabsorption.

I briefly switched from pill to patch (but it said not effective if you are over 198lbs, so I switched to IUD - now I am using the patch because I am 175 and hated my IUD)
