I got pregnant a year post-op and absolutely felt like a bottomless pie (once I got over the early queasiness). I would go to the kitchen for cereal when I got up to pee in the middle of the night. It was ridiculous!
Most people can eat more food a year or two post-op, even dense protein. And raging hormones can screw with your appetite as well. It's most likely not the case that you'll need a revision after you give birth, all of the changes from surgery are still there. But you've got a LOT going on right now, from a chemical POV.
How many calories are you eating in a day? I was maintaining at 1200, but my doctors told me to up it to 1800. I added some carbs but not a ridiculous amount, mostly things like oatmeal and raisin bran. Maybe you're not getting enough food as a baseline?
Have you checked in with your surgeon since getting pregnant? Maybe s/he would have some ideas for you.

VSG 2013, RNY conversion 2019 due to GERD. Trendweight here!
I will make this short
Got to my lowest weight of 194 (311 was my highest weight pre vsg)
Suddenly stopped losing and gaining (Did not know why, thought it was possibly due to lifestyle change, going out more often with my boyfriend)
I was eating well, excersizing, but the weight just kept creeping up.
Went to a new Gyno on 12-29-15. I requested my Mirena IUD be removed, as I did not like how it was making feel. We got on the subject of weight gain. I explained my VSG etc. The Dr. said no no, IUD is not good for women who have had WLS, bc IUD does cause weight gain. He said he has seen several women gain anywhere from 30 to 60 lbs in as little as 1 year with Mirena IUD. He weighed me and I rang in at 238.6 (I almost cried). It was also causing me several other issues like... bad acne, cramps, sore breast, achy joints, weakness...etc.
Mirena was removed immediately on 12-29-15. He said my weight should start coming back off now.
As of 1-3-15 I am 232.4 I have lost 6 lbs.... 6lbs in 5 days! I have done NOTHING different since the removal.
We will see how it goes and I will keep you guys updated.
IF YOU ARE CONSIDERING MIRENA IUD FOR BIRTH CONTROL, PLEASE TAKE THIS INFO INTO CONSIDERATION.

I'm 2 years post op from the sleeve. Prior to my surgery, I gained 90 lbs during my 1st pregnancy. At 16 weeks, I've already gained 25 lbs and I feel completely lost. I haven't had any morning sickness, which many people will think is a blessing, but if you can't stop eating, it is quite a problem. I've tried increasing my protein, loading with veggies, protein shakes, but nothing helps. The worst part is that I can't sleep and I am up eating. I keep thinking I'm going to need to do a revision after I give birth. It seems like most people on this site can't hold food down and I can't seem to get enough food in. Any advice is appreciated.
NO food always sounds good to me. I can eat anything except to many carbs/sugar at one time or else i will get sick. I will have a day or two here and there where my restriction is more than other times so i cant eat as much, but that is about all.
I just had my OB appt yesterday and baby boy is looking good. Is going to be about 8# and long. his dad is a big guy though. 6'1" and 265#. I am now going to OB every 2 weeks and I will get to tour the L&D center here in the next few weeks, and start signing up for any classes we want to take.
Since i have gotten prego, i have gained 14#. I am ok with the weight gain bc i know baby needs it to grow and be healthy on the outside. I know i can lose it once i have him. I just have to remind myself, this is one of the main reason i had my RNY in the first place.
Congrats on your little one. I am so happy that you were able to get prego. I understand having to try and try with not getting prego.
my email is [email protected] if you would like to email me.
Best of luck and congrats.
Hi there! Not sure if you're still checking in or not, but I just wanted to say congratulations on your upcoming arrival! I am 2.5 years post op VSG and found out Oct. 1st that I am pregnant as well! My husband and I tried for 9 years, even went through fertility treatments with no luck.
I lost 150 lbs with my VSG, and I'm thankful every day for that! And needless to say, it was a TOTAL shock when I found out I was pregnant because I just assumed it would never happen.
I am now nearly 15 weeks pregnant and things are going well. My pre-pregnancy weight was 165 lbs, but I went down to 155 lbs due to food aversion (no real morning sickness). I am now up to 163 lbs and praying I won't gain too much during pregnancy. I do notice I am hungry more often, but food NEVER sounds good. That was a problem I had prior to pregnancy; nothing ever sounded good. However now it's even worse. I know I need to eat, but nothing sounds good, nor do I really have any cravings.
Do you notice this as well?

I've started prenatal vitamins and I recording my food choices. I've also started doing a simple fertility tracker just in case. Following the advice listed we've decided to wait for twelve months out instead of ten. What's two extra months compared to safety right?

Hormones might be a problem early on-- rapid weight loss can overload your system with estrogen, which can make things funky.
Birth control shouldn't have any affect on future fertility; if anything, it may help.
I've read that you should only be worried if you're not pregnant after a year of active TTC (if you're under 35), but it may help to check with your OBGYN if you're concerned.

My surgeon also recommended a 12-month weight. I found it nearly impossible to continue my regular post-op eating plan while pregnant, thanks to queasiness and hormones and whatnot, so I'd be concerned about losing your window of opportunity for the most weight loss.
A few suggestions I'll make:
- Start taking prenatals ASAP! Or you can continue to take your bariatric vitamins, but add on a folic acid supplement and maybe DHA (fish oil). You need lots of folic acid stored up in advance.
- Continue to track your food and check with your OB/surgeon about how many calories you should be eating. Mine told me 1800, when I'd been eating 1200 on maintenance, and it was hard to do at first-- I had to graze.
- Some folks seem to be even more nauseous than usual after WLS while pregnant. I tried EVERYTHING-- aromatherapy, nausea bands, crackers-- and had very little luck. For a while, I had a couple of small gingersnaps for breakfast every morning because it was the only thing I could keep down, and after a year of no-carbing it was mentally pretty weird.

I got the OK from my OB to take a stool softener (Colace) every day, I found it helped a lot. Took a few days to get working, but once it did it definitely made a difference.

I had the sleeve surgery October 20, 2015. I was pregnant DURING the operation and didn't know it. Was too early to show up on pregnancy test! Now the morning sickness AND the post op situation has me sicker than a dog. 20 years of fertility and docs told me to give it up last December. So we did. And now, with a less than .001% chance of getting pregnant, I AM! I can't keep anything down. Lost 38 lbs and not from trying. I just can't eat or drink anything! I'm miserable and have a very hard time doing my job. I'm so sick. I hope this won't last the entire pregnancy.
