Glucose Test

Is it different for us?

It depends.  Your doctor will have to take several things into account... what type of surgery did you have, do you have a history of diabetes or gestational diabetes, and what they're comfortable with overall.  I hated the test with my first pregnancy (pre wls) and used my surgery as an "excuse" to try to get out of it when I had my second baby.  Doctor suggested doing a two hour test where I basically just had to have a normal breakfast and then get my levels checked two hours later.  It was sooooo easy, no waiting, and best of all, no nasty drink!  He said if it came back high or inconclusive we'd have to do the standard test, I was willing to risk going back.  Luckily everything was great and I didn't have to do anything else.  With this pregnancy, I've had issues with low blood sugar and just did the same two hour test.  Numbers came back pretty low so it was a total non issue after that.  So, basically yes, there are alternatives, you just have to talk to your doctor and find out what they're comfortable with.  Good luck!

I had the glucose test with my first 2 pregnancies (pre WLS). With my last baby (post WLS) my Dr sent me to the diabetes clinic at the hospital where I spent a few hours with other expectant mothers (that failed the glucose test) learning about gestational diabetes, except I didn't have gestational diabetes and none of the other mothers had WLS..so that part was pointless, but in the end I was given a glucometer and taught how to check my blood. This was at around 28 weeks, so I checked my blood before and after every meal for about 2 weeks and recorded my #'s and gave them to my Dr. They were all fine so she said I could just randomly check my blood every week for the rest of my pregnancy. No glucose test thank god!

I talked to my Dr at my 20week apt yesterday his response was I guess we will have to give you something for vomiting if that's what your afraid of or otherwise we will treat you as if you have GB and make you ***** your finger everyday for the rest of the pregnancy. Feeling frustrated cause he doesn't seem to get it, and I know he hasn't treated many patients with VSG but my options in such a small town are very limited.

Glad you posted this. I popped on to post the same question.

I had the sleeve almost three years ago and am 24 weeks pregnant. I asked the nurse practitioner today about my alternatives and she didn't know of any...whhhaaaaaatttt?

I know the OB at my office offers alternatives so I'm anxious to hear what they say.

I have always had reactive hypoglycemia and it's gotten worse with surgery. The lab only has one bathroom that they use for urine tests so if they make me do the GTT! I can guarantee I will be in there the whole time with a massive gut explosion.

I will let you all know what alternatives my doctor offers.

Interesting question.  I am suppose to do the test at 20 weeks.  orange gunk is sitting in my fridge now.  my concern was more from just getting it all down as i've had severe morning sickness that has really hampered my liquid and food intake.
