Protein that's safe for pregnancy?

Hi Ladies,

We just found out we are pregnant (after 6 months of very actively trying- YAY!) and I still need a protein shake to keep me good with my protein for the day.

I was only able to talk to the nurse and my first appointment isn't for another month. I know artificial sweeteners are out, but what about the vitamins and minerals?

Anyone have any information on safe protein shakes?

Thanks!

You can use artificial sweetners. I am not saying that they are good for you but I had too because I had a diabetes. I did not supplement my protein because I could barely eat. I vomitted through out my pregnancy. The baby will take all it needs from you so don't worry too much. Take a prenatal and that should be enough. Congrats!

Thanks for the reply!

I've actually found a protein powder that has no artificial sweeteners in it. I'm concerned about the Vitamin A and minerals though.

Will report back once I speak with my doctor.

That's so crummy you were so ill. I'm very early and not feeling bad, hoping this lasts as long as possible!

Thanks again!

I too have been severely ill throughout my pregnancy, and ended up hospitalized for two weeks due to dehydration. I can eat next to nothing and can not even get a protein shake close to my face due to the smell! Even in my extreme case baby is doing well at 25 weeks, you have no need to worry because baby will literally leech everything it needs off you kinda like a parasite!

I haven't supplemented protein since I was a few weeks post op (never found one I liked)  I'm currently in my second post op pregnancy (plus I breastfeed for almost a year) and I've never had any issues from not getting "enough" protein.  I'm only 5 feet tall and have a really small frame, so I think a lot of the recommendations for protein post op are way more than my body needs anyway.  As for the sweeteners, they're certainly not ideal, but in moderation I think it is fine.  My OB has no issue with my daily diet coke fix.
