Hello friends,

I had the sleeve almost 17 months ago and have lost about 190 pounds. I currently am at the smallest weight I have been since I was 10 years old, however I am just now at the weight that most sleevers start their journeys. (267 pounds.) Some background, I have 2 little girls ages 5 and 6. I was over 500 pounds with them. I was on the pill with Bell, and during that c-section they put the mirena in-just a few weeks later I became preggo with Ruby & they had to take the mirena out!!! I am now on the shot. My miracle babies for sure.

I had healthy pregnancies, no high bp, no diabetes, no issues at all. Both of my girls were healthy weights as well-7 pounds, and 7 pounds 10 ounces. I had to have csections as during my first I couldn't dialate past 9 cm. Anyhow, I have always dreamed of having a son. I would love to keep going until I got one hahaha but i doubt my hunny would like that idea. Ruby had colic so I didnt get to really enjoy her babyhood, and Bell was my first so I was terrified and then I got pregnant again so fast I didnt get to really enjoy her babyhood either. I just want to get the chance to enjoy my child as an infant.

I have a friend that had the sleeve and is having major complications. It scares me. What if now that I am healthier than I have ever been my body decides to put me through an awful pregnancy? Does having WLS make you more prone to complications? I feel like I have it too good, that maybe this time it will be full of problems. I know crazy right? I just would love to have another baby but am nervous that this time it won't be as easy. I also hear that being on the shot for as long as I have it makes it even harder to conceive. Well, I guess all I can do is pray and hope for the best once we do start trying. My shot runs out at the end of july/beginning of August and my doc says to wait at least 2 months after before actively trying. We will see how it goes....

I don't think having weight loss surgery makes you particularly prone to having a complicated pregnancy. You'll need to continue your vitamin regimine and your maternity provider will probably want to monitor your vitamin levels during your pregnancy. They might want to do additional ultrasounds to make sure your baby is growing enough. Before I got pregnant, I saw a midwife and maternal fetal medicine specialist for a pre-conception check-up, you might consider doing something like that.

I had a gastric bypass about 2 years ago and weighed about 230 when I got pregnant. I was at the point where I was no longer loosing weight and had even put back on a few pounds. I have had 2 major complications with this pregnancy, a very large ovarian cyst that required emergency surgery when I was 11 weeks pregnant and gallstones when I was 24 weeks pregnant. The ovarian cyst was completely unrelated to my weight loss surgery. The gallstones may or may not be related to my weight loss surgery. I'm currently 26 weeks pregnant, so I still have about 3 months to go. One thing I will say is that even though I was down almost 100 pounds from my highest weight when I get pregnant, I still get treated like a really obese person by the healthcare providers. For example, they told me not to gain any weight during my pregnancy and they seem to be hyper-vigilant about monitoring me for gestational diabetes. I want to tell them that my body is actually quite happy with my weight where it is, there's almost 100 pounds that it doesn't have to carry around and all my obesity related co-morbidities are gone. So, even though you've lost 190 pounds, be prepared for them to treat you like you haven't.

Thank you for the response & Congratulations on your pregnancy! I remember being treated very poorly while being pregnant as heavy as I used to be-doctors, nurses, everyone would just stare and were really quite rude at times. I was told I was going to miscarry, then I was going to have diabetes and my blood pressure was going to shoot through the roof, that my babies would be fat. Etc. etc-even from friends, family, strangers. It's like people think it's their duty to make you realize how fat you are-like I don't know already! Jeez the obese are mistreated and it's like that mistreatment is accepted in the world. It truly breaks my heart.

My biggest worry is not being able to conceive since I have been on the shot so long, and I have heard rumors. Also, I want to continue with my plan-protein, no carbs, eating as green as I can. I don't want to stop my weight loss journey, but this year is the best year for us financially, emotionally, and physically. I will be 28-young, yes, but I want to eventually go back to get my bachelors & then my master's degree. I want to have another child before I do all of this, and I don't want to put it all off much longer. Here's to hoping!

Thanks! I understand that the health care providers are just trying to do their jobs and help manage or mitigate obesity related conditions, but from my perspective, my body thinks it's on spring break after losing all this weight. I bet there are a lot of people out there like that, who are doing great after losing significant amounts of weight, but are still technically obese and get the rigamarole.

They say that loosing weight makes you more fertile, so that might help. But, I have heard that the shot has lingering fertility effects for a while. You might have to put your weight loss on hold for a while, I don't think they usually like for pregnant women to lose weight. Also, I found that the nausea and food aversions pretty much dictated what I was going to eat for the 1st 4 months, so sticking to a plan might be difficult (you probably already know this, since you've already had 2 babies).

I lost weight with my two because of the morning sickness. It was bad! I won't be trying to lose weight really, just going to choose healthy foods and small portions. Maybe I will eat every 2-3 hours to keep up with the right levels of nutrition and everything. Hoping to find a doctor that has had bariatric patients in the past. That would make me feel much better!

I got pregnant six months after my sleeve surgery and it was completely uneventful.  Overall, the pregnancy was very similar to my first.  No morning sickness, hpb, or ges diabetes (knock on wood).  The only difference was that I looked a lot cuter and my body was much happier being pregnant at 130lbs than at 200lbs.  Good luck, I'm sure you'll do great!
