5 years out - NEWLY preggo - PLEASE don't criticize me

Hello!

I am 5 years out of RNY - the only vitamin my doctor had me taking was a multi -vitamin and monitored my labs over the first year post op.  Everything was always in normal range, thus I never took anything more.  Since about 2 years post -op, my doctors practice broke up and everyone scattered to different practices.  When I went in for a checkup to the new place, I was told that I was considered a "new" patient, thus my insurance would not pay because it was not the same insurance from when I had the actual surgery.  I never went back.

I have had physicals since then, as well as routine paps, and because of my history, a full blood screen has always been done.  No problems have ever shown, except for low iron, which I had pre-op.

I am now 5 weeks pregnant, and I want to MAKE SURE my baby gets everything it needs.  Can anyone recommend what vitamins besides a prenatal I should be taking?  I can't get into see a doctor for 4 more weeks.  I may have not been taking the best care of myself (I have lost and kept off the weight) but I DO NOT want my baby to suffer in anyway.  It's not just me anymore.

Please do not criticize me for my past faults,  Thanks!

first off, congrats on the pregnancy!!! how exciting!!! please don't worry this group is nothing but supportive. we would never critisize you. its clear you care very much about your growing bean. and thats awesome. also, i don't think anything about what you said was anything to critsize.

as far as vitamins, i had gastric sleeve so i'm not sure about RNY vitamins. but i will tell you my reproductive endocrinologist put me on women's one a day prenatals bc of the DHA. now if you have low iron from before its even more important when you're pregnant. i had to double my iron. you probably need to as well. also, my RE also put me on vitamin d. he says all women of chilbearing age should be taking vitamin D. so you probably wanna take that. i also take b12 but i don't know if you need to take that. i know for the sleeve we do. but i would say that the most important thing you take other than prenatal is iron. double the iron. super important. anyway good luck sweetie!! we're here for you!

How often do you take the 50,000 IU of Vit D?  That is the prescription strength.....

I did not switch to pre-natal vitamins as my RNY vitamins had enough folic acid in them.

here is my vitamin schedule from my surgeon for rny patients

Breakfast Bariatric advantage multi vit and calcium (500mg)

Lunch b12 and 2 iron (had to double the iron during pg)

Afternoon multi vit and calcium

evening calcium

I took the prenatal, my B12, and instead of 1 calcium (600 mg a day) OB had me bump it to 2 a day.

Congrats!  You definitely need to get Folic Acid on the list.!  I would call your OB and strongly remind them of your surgery and your concerns over getting sufficient vitamins, they can easily send you for lab work to make sure. I did and told them I really felt due to the special cir****tances that I should be seen earlier rather than later, as many OB's don't want to see you till about 8 weeks or so.  Each person is going to be different, so while one of us may need to double their iron, that may not be what you need, and you should be very careful, only do what you doc tells you to do as far as medications and vitamins  Vitamins, especially Iron, could easily make you sick if you take too much.

If it helps I am 8 years out, and didn't do a lot of follow up either, my doc ended up moving too far away and I didn't care for the new doctors that took over.  You have to be strong and stand up for things, also do not let your OB make you take the glucola test for the gestational diabetes, there are other options, that is unless you don't dump.

Best of luck!
