Glucose Tolerance Test
I am 2.5 years post op and 23 weeks pregnant. I have to take the glucose tolerance test on 5/2/13 at my next OB appt. The OB said I would be fine and the nutritionist from by bariatric office said I would be fine. Both said I would probably be a queasy from the sugar but the test should still tell them what they want to know. I am allowed to eat before the test. I know some people have to fast but my OB doesn't require fasting. It is not just because I am post op bariatric. He just doesn't require fasting for the test. Has anyone taken the test that was allowed to eat before and how did you do? I have never dumped but I do get hypo reactive (late stage dumping) and my sugar will drop and when it happens it is quick! I plan on taking a protein bar and some juice and anything else I can think of with me to eat as soon as if I feel a sugar drop coming on. Just curious how others did if they got to eat before the test. Thanks.
I was permitted to eat prior to the 1 hr gtt and my levels were elevated--but they were elevated with my 2nd pregnancy as well and that was pre op. I have issues with RH as well and had been having issues along in the pregnancy so while I knew the gtt would make me feel awful I really wanted the OB to see the results to make sure everything was ok. I took a protein bar and high sugar snacks with me for after the test and it did throw my sugars off for several hours! I then had to do the 3 hr gtt fasting which I passed although I felt awful that entire day! My RH flared up tons during 2nd trimester (even when it typically shouldn't have) but has been pretty much non-existant in the 3rd trimester--I'm 38 weeks now.
I am hyper-reactive and take metformin. My doctor's and midwife said, "if you can not eat like 10 jellybeans without an episode, than we will not follow through with the traditional test." They suggested a daily curve check at home...test every few hours, eat, drink normally and see the shifts...
I am sorry they are putting you through this knowing you are hyper-reactive!
I took mine, without any issues, about 8 weeks ago. I was also allowed to eat before too, so I made sure it was protein since if I simply have anything sugary and no protein, I crash. I brought a friend along (done in lab, not doc's office) to make sure I'd be fine to drive home (and some snacks of course in case of a crash). I discussed all of my concerns with my OB and nurse about the test and the benefits certainly outweighed any possible inconveniences for me. And the drink tastes like a mix of very flat orange crush and a not well diluted McDonald's orange drink, it's kind of revolting but you're doing it for the kid. :)
