Pregnant - 14 months post-op

Hi all,

I feel very blessed to have gotten pregnant and I'm more nervous/anxious than excited at the moment.  We essentially got pregnant our first month trying so I wasn't expecting it so soon.  I have a three year and experienced a great deal of morning sickness and gained a lot of weight as I fed my nausea with carbs.  I'm hoping this pregnancy will be sickness free or I will need to find ways to cope.

Question about the gestational diabetes test.  Has anyone done that post-op or is there an alternative to drinking that surgery beverage?

First, congratulations!

For the glucose test, there are lots of alternatives.  Some doctors will have you monitor your blood sugar at home for a few weeks, some have you eat a few jelly beans in place of drinking the sludge, etc.  I did a test where I had to eat a "normal" breakfast and have my blood drawn two hours later... super easy!  Talk to your doctor and see what he/she is comfortable with.

Interesting.   My OB has has some RNY patients in the past so we'll see what he comes up with - I wonder if he'll be as creative.

Thanks and best of luck.

I did the 1 hr and 3 hr test and yes I felt miserable but I wanted to be sure--I had been checking my levels at home and while my fasting and post meal levels were fine there were times I had bad symptoms shortly after eating and would check and my blood sugar went as high as 356 but only 30 min after eating so no one cared--so I did the 1 hr to be sure, failed it and then did the 3 hr and it was fine.

This is my 3rd pregnancy (1st two were pre op) and I had no morning sickness with the 1st two (boys) but did with this (girl) and I ended up grazing to combat it but I didn't need to graze on much and didn't gain any weight while I had the morning sickness--2nd trimester was a different story!  But then my weight seems to have leveled off and I haven't really gained any the 3rd trimester (I'm 31 1/2 weeks)
