Hello Everyone,

So I will be 6 months post op on the 26th. I have been on the Depo shot for years because everything else gave me terrible side effects now and recently I bled for 5 weeks and the next time for 3 weeks so I went to my OBGYN and she had me do a vaginal and regular ultrasound to make sure that I do not have anything going on, come to find out the ultrasounds came back saying everything was fine and working normal! I asked my OBGYN why I would bleed for that many weeks at a time and she told me that the Depo shot makes some woman bleed like that and I explained to her that prior to weight loss surgery I NEVER bled while on the shot and she explained that as you lose so much weight your body could totally change how it reacts to the birth control...while I totally understand that I am just confused because I am due for another shot however I do not want to get another one if I'm going to bleed and I have been told that it take woman quite a few months generally to even go back to a normal cycle after stopping the shot...what has everyone elses's experience been with the shot...My thoughts are just to not take the next depo shot considering it will probably take me several months before my body goes back to normal and id even be able to get pregnant but I dont want to be selfish and not get the shot and end up pregnant and something happen to my baby because im ONLY 6 months post op....Please help as you can tell im confused on what I should do!!

YOu should talk to your OB about your birth control options... perhaps changing your BC method and adding in condoms for a while to be 'safer'?  Maybe once your hormones level out you can go back to the Depo shots...

the shot is not the problem, its the weight loss. you have a surge of hormones, just like you doc said and sometimes can have break through bleeding. stopping the shot won't help.

Weight loss or weight gain, especially in a significant amount changes the way you produces and uses insulin which affects your females hormones FSH, LH ect....... which can affect your periods, and fertility....... also can affect how you react to medication

Also the shot can make certain people bleed for long periods...... my sister inlaw who has never had a weigh issue bleed for 3 mos straight

I would say you need to change your birth control to something else

If the bleeding doesn't bother you, you can keep taking the shot, but if the bleeding gets to be to much it can affect you blood levels in your body and you can become anemic

I took the Depot shot for several years and had no issues except for weight gain...... but when I stopped using it it took me almost 2 years to get my periods to be regular

Have you looked into the birth control ring or patch instead of pills...... or even a diaphram and condoms and spermicide..... IUD is also an option though personally that would be my last one I would choose lol

Hope this helps
