I am pregnant!

Good Afternoon Everyone,

I had my gastric by pass a little over two years ago and since then got married and have a baby on the way!

I am so excited but so scared!

I had my blood work completed about 6 months ago and some of it was a little down - since then I have been very careful about making sure I get all of my vitamins in and increase as recommended.

My bloodwork  is better but I am worried that now with a child on the way - it wont be enough. I hear you cant just add an additional multi-vitamin as it can be harmful to me and the baby! I guess my question is: How often do you get your bloodwork completed?

I have miscarried about a year ago - and scared of it happening again. It was so painful and saddening.

Any suggestions to get my protein in - my stomach and I are not getting along very well.

All of your feedback and advice is greatly appreciated.

i'm very sorry to hear about your previous miscarriage. i can't even imagine, but congrats on being pregnant again. for vitamins ask your doctor what they want you taking. taking multiple multi-vitamins is bad yes, because you're not supposed to go over 1mg of folic acid, and in most cases most vitamins are around 800mcg, unless prescribed by a doctor. in my case, my multi is a prescription with 1.22mg of folic, iron, and other minerals and such.

i get my blood work done every few months. not sure what the exactly timeframes are, but they do it to make sure my iron levels stay up where they belong, etc. etc.

as for protein, there are days when i don't think i've gotten in enough protein, or i lose part of my dinner, so i end up making a protein fruit smoothie or a protein shake to get the extra 20-30 grams that i can drink down. so even when solids are giving me a problem, i can still drink the protein and calcium that i need.

Congratulations on your pregnancy and best wishes for a healthy 9 months! I take my prenatal which has DHA and increased folic acid and also a prescribed iron supplement (Corvite) due to severe anemia. I was also taking my regular multi vitamin but by OB told me to stop. I have my blood drawn to check for the anemia every 4 weeks right now since it was bad enough in past that I needed infusions and she wants to make sure it stays okay otherwise I may need them again as I get closer to my due date which is still a while from now.

I'm almost 3 yrs post op and had my vitamins checked every 6 months for the first 2 yrs and then they said annually was fine.  When I went in pregnant this fall they did check them again and they are fine, they suggested I go in again once more in the pregnancy to have them re-checked--will do in Feb which is my 3yr surgery mark anyways. I have not switched vitamins with the pregnancy.  I just continued with my 2 bariatric advantage multi-vits a day, 3 calcium, 1 iron (27mg) and 1 b12.  The multivits have folic acid so ob and pcp said no reason to switch to prenatals.

I have (per surgeons recommnedation) never stopped a daily protein shake so even when I had morning sickness and didn't want to eat protein I have always gotten in adequate protein.
