Congratulations to you all!!! I had RNY in 2005 and in 2009 gave birth to my baby girl. She was my fourth and only after WLS. Oops!! I had a few complications and my OB certainly didn't get it that my body would not behave as a normal woman's would. I had two things going for me 1. I had been on the medical field for a long time and cannot be placated and 2. This was my fourth and could easily distinguish "normal". First three months I was sick and couldn't hold anything down. Alot of that had to do with ulcers i was dealing with beforehand so I was in hospital for a few hours once a week getting fluids. After that subsided I got really tired. By the time I was 5 months I could not walk to my office without stopping to catch my breath. Then the heart palpitations and dizziness started and I was scared. My OB said my labs were fine and this is normal preganancy stuff. I knew differently so I finally called my Pcp and told her what was wrong. She sent me straight to the ER where they checked my heart and drew more labs. Heart was fine but was so severely anemic I was admitted. Apparently OB only checked serum iron which was routine but according to my hematologist the only true way to check for anemia is to check ferritin levels. 40-100 is normal. Mine was 9! They inserted a central line and from then on I had ivS of iron and B shots once a week. In the hospital I was also told I had gestational diabetes and was not gaining enough weight. They told me the "drink" test would not give accurate results so they took a fasting draw, had me eat a meal, waited am hour then took another draw. I ended up on a small amount of insulin but it was all ok. The moral to my story is I was told by my hematologist who's brother is a specialist in WLS that all women who have had WLS should be monitored by a hematologist as well. Regular docs and Pcp do not run the same tests a hematologist would. Off my soap box now. I wish you all healthy bodies and very healthy babies. Congratulations again!
Thanks so much for your info. I just took the glucose test the other day and it came back negative thank God, but my OB did tell me that I was a little bit anemic. . .and now that you mentioned about the ferritin levels I feel like I better go get checked by a weight loss surgery doctor. I haven't been to one in about 2 years. . .and I'm going to be 3 years post op in March. Thanks again for the info :0 )
