Any complications??
Hello,
My name is Tiffany. I am 3yrs post op from a DS. My husband and I are considering another baby but I'm nervous. I know that have been many healthy pregnancies. Congrats to all of you!! I'm concerned about the complications. Nutrition for myself can be a struggle what about the baby. Can anyone share?
Hugs,
Tiffany
I know about the fear of complications all too well. I was only 5.5 months post op from my RNY when I found out about this pregnancy. I am now 38 weeks and 3 days pregnant with a very healthy baby boy and have had absolutely zero complications.
I feared nutrition would be a big issue because I was so new post op and still have malabsorption, but I have found that since becoming pregnant, I actually have an appetite and can eat quite a bit more at one time than I could before pregnancy (thanks to pregnancy hormones). Nevertheless, my doctor has kept a close eye on my baby's growth to make sure he's getting all he needs to get nice and big and I'm proud to say that my boy has been right on track with growth at every u/s.
With my first pregnancy I was borderline with gestational diabetes. This time my sugars are completely normal. I have had only one elevated blood pressure reading (and that was at my 38 weeks check-up this past Tuesday). But nothing else out of the ordinary. In short, it's been a much healthier pregnancy than my first.
The only thing not in the ordinary is that my baby is breech and has been refusing to flip around and that has nothing to do with my wls.
Good luck with making this decision and God bless! :)
Hey! Dont be nervous pleaseeeeeeee *gets on 1 knee* lol
I'm a few days away from being 8m post op and im 2m preggo as of yesterday. I can honestly say that since week 4 i've been suffering from extreme nausea and borderline dehydrated to the point i regreted getting preggo and was getting depressed thinking my baby would suffer since i cant eat a lot already PLUS i have nausea..
Now, after dealing with it for over a month and being monitored constantly by my ob..i can safely say I don't believe my wls has anything to do with it (neither does my ob) and its strictly a treatable pregnancy related issue... (this is my first child...first time ever being preggo) BUT BUT BUT...let me say, Its hard managing the nausea because a large part of managing it is EATING...i've noticed if my belly stays constantly full i'm not sick....but when i get remotely hungry i'm dead ill...(dry heaving ..etc)...also, my ob put me on a "nausea diet" which consists of protein+sugar (due to having low sugar levels which also causes nausea) at every meal. now, as a wls post op the thought of eating sugar every 2 hours scared me! But i did it and i havent gained a pound...also, the only reason it was hard to eat every 2 hours was all a psychological...I felt that since i've lost all this weight i would blow up eating so much..and thats not why i had surgery...etc
So let me also say this...i've had an u/s and the baby is doing great :) im losing weight (lost 10lbs since week 6 due to the increased motabolism pregnancy gives you naturally) and my blood work came back great (ive had it checked weekly)..and after drinking powerade im no longer borderline dehydrated so i came to the conclusion WLS is not affecting my baby its affecting my mental lol (thinking i SHOULD be eating more in quantity when frankly my body is utilizing what i do eat and providing for the baby just fine) ...Thanksgiving i ate ALL DAY LONG...leftovers every 2 hours in very small portions or what my stomach would handle and i felt the best ive felt this whole pregnancy
I now take my prenatal vitamins and extra iron, and i've added in b12 due to the mal absorbtion...preop i was type 2 diabetic..high blood pressure...right now as a post op my diabeties is in remission and has been since surgery..and my blood pressure is on the low side of normal...I am not considered high risk (I even asked to make sure and she said having wls does not mean im high risk and should have a healthy baby as long as i eat because my health is PERFECT)...if i would have gotten pregnant in the condition i was in preop i would have automatically been high risk due to being diabetic and high blood pressure!
I wish you the best of luck...and hopefully i'll be telling you congrats soon if you decide to start your family!!!
Thank you so much ladies for sharing your experience with me. I currently have 3 children, 12,8 and 4 but am 41 and would like to have one more before I'm to old. Congrats to both of you on having healthy pregnancies. I was high risk with 2 of my other pregnancies due to the fact that I have RA an lupus but during those pregnancies both were in remission. I'll keep you posted.
Hugs,
Tiffany
