I'm having extreme ..24 hours a day ... Waves of nausea. I was prescribed zofran and it doesn't do much. I was told by a friend that I should drink ensure for nutrients and stay hydrated until I can get back to the dr. ( I even throw up diet ginger ale!)

Any one have experience with this? Everything else I read suggest toast andcrackers but I took those items out my life post rny

Thanks

honestly when it comes to morning sickness, especially a case this bad, i would suggest eating anything you can get down. my doc often tells me to cut out carbs but when i couldn't get anything down she told me go ahead and have those crackers, the bread, basically dry bland things. because you need to eat something. your body and your baby need the calories. once things even out you can go back to eating the way you did before he nausea. but at this point its better to eat something than nothing.

My OB had told me to supplement with ensure or boost when I was not getting in enough calories and nutrients. I tried the chocolate ensure and they tasted about like a slim fast. However, they had like 200 or so calories, only 9 G protein, and like 40g of carbs! To me they had too many carbs and not enough protein. I guess if you're just wanting to up calories they would be okay. Oh! And the amount of carbs would sometimes make my sugar drop about 30-45 min after drinking one (I think reactive hypoglycemia). Just try and get down whatever you can. Definitely stay hydrated and drink water!

I had extreme all day sickness too, though it was before my Rny. They had to up my Zofran from 4mg to 8mg (I believe), maybe you can call your dr and seeif they can increase it at all? Are you taking the sub lingual form of Zofran? That one worked better for me than the pill. Eat anything that you can keep down, carbs are better for you at this point of your pregnancy. You need energy and so does the wee one. Good luck and keep us posted

off topic, but have you tried acupuncture to help with the morning sickness since the medication isn't doing much to help? ironically, it's one of the few things my insurance will cover under the acupuncture clause, morning sickness and pain management.

as for staying hydrated, if you're having severe morning sickness, i'd say anything you can keep down would be a plus :/

Update: i tried ensure and threw it up..tried ginger ale again n threw it up..tried yogurt. So today I got out the bed to try to get to mu zofran n didn't make it..I started dry heaving n trying to vomit but since there isn't anything on my stomach nothing came up. I was about to either go to urgent care or the hospital but decided to call the after hours nurse at my dr office. She called in a prescription for phenegran suppositories. I'm on my way to pick them up now..I hope it works .

Also, I'm going to look into acupuncture..id like to try more natural methods first.peppermints are helping more than the zofran!

I had the 8 mg of zofran and it would help sometimes. As long as I remembered to take it about 30-40 minutes before I ate. There were times when it wouldn't help at all. I didn't have morning sickness , I had afternoon and evening sickness.  I agree with some other girls. I would get down whatever you can even if it is carbs. I know we are taught to not eat them after surgery but you must get those calories in for your babys sake and your sake.  The suckers from babies r us work great too.

I hopeyou find a remedy.

I don't eat refined carbs either - try this website for different types of crackers (made with almond flour instead) - she also has bread recipes that you could make for toast.......

http://www.elanaspantry.com/sesame-crackers/

maybe that will help and make you feel more comfortable about eating "crackers and bread"

One of the things that I found helpful was halls cough drops. I had the gestational diabetes so thankfully the honey lemon ones came in sugar free. I'm thinking it was the eucalyptus that was soothing but I would go thru a bag a day and they are considered safe for pregnancy. I hope you get relief soon, the suppositories should help because even with the heaving it's getting into your system for relief. My daughter has migraines and can't keep anything down so we do the suppositories and it works wonders.
