quick question about vitamins
hey guys just a quick question, wanted to get your opinion. i've been taking 18mg of chewable BA iron since surgery 2 yrs ago. during pregnancy i was told to up my iron so i doubled it. but i recently bought these new raspberry chocolate iron chews from BA which are way better to take than the other ones. these are 30mg each. which is a little less than my doubled 18mg iron i was taking before. my question is, do i just take 1 30mg chew? i don't want to double it and be getting too much iron. gonna ask my midwife but wanted to see what you guys thought.
thanks in advance

Get your midwife's opion, but i would so add a vit c with it or take it with a glass of OJ to help it absorb better. It works and a lot of dr have their anemic patients do it. I had prob with anemia prior to preg and added it with a noted jump in iron. During preg i cont' with vit c and my iron levels cont' to climb and during preg it usually drops cause we are growing a little person and that's a lot of work :).

IDK bout the sleeve but i do know that with RNY we r not to take gummie vits due the decreased ability to digest the gummy stuff. IDK if that is bc of the decrease in size of tummy or change in the intestines. I take a chewable one which isnt bad taste like orange. Don't know if that helps but it's a thought.

I took one prenatal vitamin per day that was the generic type prescribed by my OB. In addition I took one 2000 iu vit D. and a sublinguel multi B vit 2 x week. My labs were perfect for iron, folic acid etc. So basically I have no clue about how much iron to take on its own. Are you taking a prenatal vitamin at all? Have you had any labs drawn recently? I know with the VSG we don't need to worry nearly as much about vitamins as those with malabsorptive procedures. One of the main reasons I fought for the sleeve :)
i had the sleeve too. but my surgeon wanted me to take iron. guess i've always been a little low. i take prenatal, vit d, b12 and iron. i started taking calcium when i got pregnant just to help. even though technically i don't have to take those. i don't drink milk or anything so i don't get as much calcium as i probably should. i upped my vit d bc i was low. and i upped iron because i was low. i got my blood done a couple months ago. and then again recently after the upping of iron. all my levels seem good now. but like i said, this is a new iron and its just a diff # of mg. i think my surgeon would say just take one 30mg.
my midwife didn't seem to know. she said to bring the vitamins to my next visit.

so i decided to stop taking calcium.
a. because no one ever told me to take it in the first place.
b. i get calcium from my prenatals and from all the cheese i eat
c. the calcium seems to be getting in the way of me absorbing the iron which i was told i'm low in. and if i look back i think the defficiency may have started when i began taking the calcium pills. so i'm cutting them out. that way 30mg of iron should be enough.
thanks for all the feeback ladies :)
