So....since i was a toddler my way of self soothing has been sucking my pointer finger and curling my hair. this has  been going on all my life. stopped only briefly in high school when i had braces. my mom tried everything to get me to stop including putting nasty bitter stuff on my nails that tasted yucky. i sucked right through it. they tried to shame me out of it. it got to the point where i hide it from everyone (except my boyfriends who always thought it was cute). i would always have this curl at the top of my head (where my bangs are supposed to be) that i always had to hide when ppl came over. if i try REALLY hard to conciously not do it i can. i kept it up once for a couple of weeks. but in stressful times it really really helps to do it. it soothes me. curling my hair constantly makes me pull it out little by little. so my bangs are miniscule. and my curling finger is all jacked up. which i don't mind all that. my husband always thought it was cute bc i was his little girl. BUT i'm about to be a mom!! what am i going to do?? sure when he's little he won't realize, but when he gets older and sees his mom doing that, it'll be creepy i think.

has ANYONE ever known someone to have this problem i have? any advice?

Kick it while you can, I have a friend who sucks her thumb, had a daughter who started sucking because she saw mommy doing it, now it just looks awful to see both mother and daughter sucking away. She does not like to see her daughter doing it and punishes her for it, but she can not help herself. It sends mixed emotions to the child as a kid, and it will definately not amuse them (and their friends as a teen, and it will probably anger them as adults. My opinion, kick that habit as fast as you can because you are the mirror for your kid, and the example.

I think we all in some way have a little embarrassing habit within us. mine is pulling out my eyelashes and biting my nails, picking at my scalp. when not pregnant I see a dr for it and he prescribes me anti anxiety meds. I recommend journal and maybe seek a therapist when we do the things we do there is usually an underlying cause that we have not yet realized. nothing to be ashamed of if I could afford a therapist I would . they tend to have great suggestions and interesting explanations for why we do what we do. hope my reply was helpful :)
