How did your surgeon react?

So I am 6 months post op and just found out that I am pregnant this morning. While I am ecstatic and over the moon, I can't help but fear my surgeons' reaction to this news. I know that they don't recommend pregnancy until 12-18 months post op, but I can't help but feel this is gods' plan.

My husband and I have been together for 17 years, and have 1 son(a clomid baby). Not once during that 17 years did we ever have an "accident".  We have been using condoms since I had the surgery, but that didn't even stop this pregnancy.

I was kind of worried since I was 3 days late, but that is not out of the ordinary for me. I'm trying not to worry too much about telling my surgeon. I feel like a teenage girl about to tell her father that she's pregnant.

I would love to hear from the ladies who ended up pregnant before the recommended 12-18 months time.

What type of surgery did you have?

I got pregnant 6 months after my sleeve surgery (on purpose for what it is worth).  My surgeon was fine with it, my ob was fine with it, and the baby is now just about a year old and has never had any issues.

Mostly, make sure you're getting all your protein, fluids, vitamins, and eating a good balance of foods.  Congratulations, you'll do great!

I also had the gastric sleeve.

I'm happy to hear that everything went well for you and both you and your baby are healthy.

Thank you for the advice and the encouraging words.

I was much like you! So scared of my surgeon's reaction, but getting prompt medical care teaming together your surgeon and OB is absolutely important! I was scared that my surgeon would be disappointed in me, but he was very cool about it and even congratulated me.

I was 5.5 months post op when I got pregnant and for what it's worth, I'm having a perfect pregnancy so far!

I'm glad to hear that I'm not alone with feeling scared of my surgeons' reaction.

I agree with you about getting prompt prenatal care. I'm going to go today to see the nurse and get confirmation then schedule my 1st prenatal appointment. I already took two tests(one a digital) and they both came out positive, but I still need to get the nurses' confirmation.

I'm so glad to hear that your surgeon was cool about it and congratulated you. Keep your fingers crossed for me that my surgeon gives me the same reaction. No matter what his reaction, I am truly happy about this pregnancy.

Congratulations on your pregnancy!

My surgeon tore me apart! He even suggested a dilation to stretch my pouch as much as possible. I was devastated! He sid he never had anyone do this before, which totally shocked me. But my OB said, well what else would you expect? Its rare not to get preggers after major weight loss.

Needless to say, I havent seen him since!

I was in the same boat I found out I was pregnant 4 months post op just days before my check up with my surgeon. I had lost 60 lbs prior to conception so I think that is what did it.
he was clearly irritated with me and implied I was'nt taking proper precautions. I asked him if it was safe or not and he said yes just chance of lack of nourishment to baby. I then asked him if I can pick up where I left off with my weight loss after the baby is born and he said yes. I lost 20 lbs the first trimester and am now 30 weeks and have gained back 7 of the 20 lbs so baby is healthy at about 2 lbs 6 ozs and measuring perfect with a good strong heartbeat. your dr may be more supportive then mine just expect a lecture and congratulations on your pregnancy!

HamDan - Wow! I am sorry to hear that you had that response from your surgeon. Actually from what I've read it is not that uncommon. I hope all is well with you.

prittykitty1984 - Yeah I can imagine he'll be disappointed with me, and I know I'm going to get a lecture. I'm not going to let anything get me down. I'm just going to do everything possible to make sure that baby and I stay healthy. That's all I can do.

I'm happy to hear all is going well with you and your pregnancy. Thank you!

unfortunately i had a surgeon that pretty much took my money and ran. I haven't seen HIM once after my surgery. I saw his nurses. When I found out i was pregnant i was 5 months post op. The nurse said "what ever happened to the waiting 1 year plan?" thats all she said. She said all i had to do was take my vitamins. she also said there are no risks. (i dont believe that) and that i should definately not take the glucose test when they try and give it.

Good luck!!! If you have a negative reaction....eff'm because you will be fine!

That is unfortunate. I hope everything is going well with your pregnancy. My bariatric nurse told me that she has a lot of patients in the same situation and as long as I follow their recommendations that we will be fine.

I've had to add a prenatal vitamin plus an iron to my daily regimen. She also advised me to eat every 2 hours and add a protein shake. This is not very hard as I am pretty much hungry all day.

I haven't had any negative reactions yet. I still haven't talked to my surgeon. I left a message, but he hasn't returned my call. I just said I had to inform him of something.

Thanks for the advice and best of luck to you!
