Hey, everyone!  I had RNY in April 2012 and just found out I'm 5 weeks pregnant.  I am still in shock and scared.  I have a 5-year-old, so I kind of know what to expect.  It's the combination of post WLS (so  soon) and pregnancy that concerns me.   Because I'm not that far out from surgery put me at a higher risk of miscarriage or other issues?  From a nutrition stand point, what should I change, if anything?  My nutritionist can't see me for another 2 weeks...  I'm just really concerned, so any knowledge you can provide is appreciated.  Thanks!

Getting pregnant so soon after surgery is scary. I was 5.5 months post op and I had many of the same concerns and questions as you did. Good news is that I'm now 27 weeks pregnant with a very healthy baby boy.

Surgery (newly post-o*****t) does not put you at a higher risk for miscarriage, but vitamin deficiency can, so make sure to stay on top of your vitamins. Different people are advised to do different things, but I take all my regular RNY vits plus an added prenatal.

Nutrition wise, you will have to change your focus a little. You'll need to make sure to get in healthy carbs and whole grains. Baby needs those. Lots of fruits and veggies, too, but keep up with protein as well. It's important to eat 5 or 6 small meals a day to keep you going. Baby will take what he/she needs from you. You may continue to lose weight through the pregnancy, but as long as baby continues to grow as he or she should, it's okay.

Finally, this is a great group of ladies - all very supportive and ready/willing to answer any question. Feel free to ask anything! Best wishes for a happy, healthy 9 months! :)

I found out I was pregant 3 months po. I had RNY April 30th, so really I was only a month out when I concieved. It has been rough, but I would only contribute it to hypermesis.

I was diagnosed with hyperemesis, which is totally non related to RNY. But complicated my process more since I already had RNY. I ended up eing hospitalized for 10 days and having a PICC line in place with IV fluids and a Zofran pump until I was over the hump.

Not to mention, it was my luck that I am having twins. So...that complicated matter a little more.
Now that I am over the "hump" my morning sickness and nausea is just about gone. Im off of IV fluids and doing great.

Ive never had an issue with the progress and development of hte babies. Only thing is I cant take the vitamins as they make the nausea worse.

Just remember to stay hydrated and eat well, and you will do GREAT! I eat whatever I can, except greasy and fried foods and my pouch still treats me well.
I am feeling wonderfully bored now :)
