Aug 1st Shaelyn Update

Hi Everyone,

Shaelyn has recovered fairly well from her trauma (shock to her system)when we first brought her to the hospital.  She is to hopefully have a banding procedure (open heart surgery) this week sometime.  This procedure is to help her get off the ventilator, she is taking her own breaths at this time and is on room air but the ventilator is there to remind her or to help her along.  Shaelyn needs a new heart.  We are on the transplant list and now waiting.  The earlier procedures they were hoping to do will not really work as her right side of her heart is affected too and it would be too many surgeries ending in the same result of her needing a new heart.  The banding procedure will help us to lead a more normalized life here at sick kids until a heart is found.  Thank you for keeping our precious baby in your prayers and thoughts and we hope you will continue to keep praying for us.  We are fighting for Shaelyn and fighting hard to give her the best chance at surviving all of this and going on to lead a normal life with us.

I'm so sorry you and Shaelyn are going through all this.  I hope you have a great support system around you.

You have a fierce mama bear instinct...you've had it since the day you found out you were pregnant and fought to give your pregnancy the best chance of success with PCOS.  Now she's here and she's got some big challenges to overcome but she's got her mama's fight in her.

I don't come to this board very much anymore but I've been here every day lately looking for Shaelyn updates.  You're both very much on my mind.

I'm continuing to pray for you and Shaelyn! I hope and pray she recieves a transplant soon! Did the doctors give you any average expected length of time it could take for a heart to become available?

The dr had said that the longest they have had to wait for a donor heart for an infant here was approx 5 1/2 months.  Hopefully we will not have to wait that long.  With babies under a year blood type matching doesn't matter, but size and antibodies do.  And the sicker your baby is the sooner they get one when one is available.
