New Here... 6 weeks pregnant

Hi! my name is jill, i am new to this board, but not necessarily to OH. i had RNY 3 years ago, and never really hit my goal. i didnt lose 100lbs, and i am still technically obese. i am 5'3" and the lowest i hit was 183. but for me, that was incredibly exciting! i had a lot of complications after RNY... absorbtion issues, and food issues. i have not touched sugar or "white" stuff in over 3 years, but i tend to still eat carbs and probably larger portions than i should. i cannot eat nearly what i used to, and i am a pro at maintaining... but i would have been happy losing at least another 20-30lbs.
last week i found out i was pregnant. as of now i am a little over 6 weeks along. i am nervous because of my food issues, and because of my weight, but we are also so happy too.
this is my second pregnancy. my first was 5 years ago, my son is now 4 1/2. being heavy and pregnant was so hard and scary.
so this brings me to now. i am scared of gaining a ton of weight back, as of right now i am 190... but i also cant eat lately. i am so sick! it wasnt this way with my son... so i dont know if this preg is different just because all pregs can be different, or if it is different because of my RNY. i am nauseated about 85% of the day... and the other parts of the day i have the worst gas pains!
most remedies i see are carb or soda related, which i am afraid to travel down that road. i want this to be a healthy pregnancy, but i want to be well too and not feel so sick!
anyway, i just wanted to say hello! and if anyone has had any of the sickness, any advice is always appreciated!
thanks!!!

First off, congratulations on  your new addition! :)

Secondly, this pregnancy will be very different from  your first for sure.
For the nausea, I would recommend talking to your doctor about Zofran. You will need to be able to get in as much calories as you can and it sounds like you normally have a hard enough time with that.
You will also have to add carbs back into your diet. Baby needs them to grow and for brain development. Try to keep them healthy - whole grains and fruit instead of refined carbs and sugar. Don't slack off on your protein, either. If need be go back to shakes and such, but baby needs protein as well. You'll also have to add some fat back into your diet if you've been avoiding it. Eat full fat cheeses and milk or at least 2% if you can't stomach full fat. Veggies like avocado and olives and proteins like fish have high healthy fat content as well.
Drinking soda is not the end of the world if you resort to it. I had to in order to help combat the nausea even after the Zofran. In the end, though, it is a personal choice whether or not you go down that road. It can be a slippery slope and put you right back in the middle of a bad habit, so just be cautious if you do decide to pop a can or two.

My final advice is to get set up with OB care as soon as you can and put your bariatric surgeon on your prenatal care team as well. You'll want to have your labs checked often to make sure you're not becoming deficient in anything. Absolutely continue on your RNY vitamin regiment and you may want to add a prenatal and possibly a DHA and folic acid supplement.

Best wishes for a happy healthy 9 months! :)

thank you so much! i went food shopping for many "back to basics" items. but this past week i am lucky if i keep down toast. so far i kept down two slices of toast and some dry cereal today. i tried soda once after my RNY and the bubbles going down my throat is what made me feel sick, soda was never an issue with me. but i am so afraid of dumping that i pretty much tried to stay away from all that stuff (except chips and such, those are my weakness and downfall)
i have an appointment in 2 weeks, i can ask about the zofran. or maybe i can call about it?!
i really appreciate all the advice!
whats a typical day of meals for you ladies? i know i am doing terribly right now, but i am hoping this feeling is temporary!
it really helps to have others going through this type of situation, (not feeling sick, but preg after wls)
thanks again!!!!

Don't wait the 2 weeks to get some nausea relief! I would call now. :) I don't dump on soda as long as it's diet, but if the bubbles make you nauseous, you may want to steer clear. The morning sickness is probably temporary and you'll start to feel better as you come out of the first trimester. Just do the best you can and know that baby will take whatever he or she needs from you. You may see your weight go down as a result.

Typical eats for a day for me:

B - Cereal w/ milk (I have gotten out of the habit of measuring my food, but still stop when I'm full)
S - PB&J w/ glass of milk
L - Usually leftovers. Today it was 2 tacos (corn tortillas, ground turkey, lettuce, tomato, cheese)
S - Protein shake (SF Carnation instant breakfast - 2 pouches, 2c milk, or Low Carb Slim Fast)
D - Some sort of protein, potato or other carb like pasta or rice and veggie
S - Veggies w/ ranch

This is an ideal kind of day for me. I don't always get to eat this much or this good. And I still have bad days where I want a 300 calorie muffin for a snack instead of a protein shake or veggies.

Hello and congrats!!! I am 2 years and 5 months post-op I had an RNY Gastric Bypass March 2nd 2010. I have lost 131 pounds total. I am 8 weeks and 4 days pregnant with twins. So far I've gained about 6 pounds and I also have the same fear as you of gaining a lot of weight back. But then I think we will still have our tool even after we give birth so it shouldn't be so hard to lose it again. . .right.
I am feeling so much gas pains too!!!! I feel like I have to go to the bathroom SO bad but nothing comes out and I feel like I have to just pass some gas soooooo bad and I feel everything twisting and turning and it's very painful. . .Thankfully this hasn't happened in a few days and I hope it doesn't happen again. I don't know what it was that was causing those extreme gas pains but it has passed and it will pass for you too.  Just remember to take all your vitamins! I wish you the best of luck with everything!!!
