Hello Ladies,

I am new in this forum and also its my first time being pregnant this long...I am 20 weeks and I feel so blessed! I would like to know how much Folic Acid I should I take. I am taking 1000 mcg but I want to know if since we had the gastric by-pass I should take more. I will check with my doctors but I would love to have your feedback.

Have a wonderful day!

I had the VSG, not RNY, but I know that one very affective way to take folic acid and all B vitamins is sublingually. I bought a bottle of B vitamins that includes double the daily recommended dose of folic acid at Trader Joes for less than $10 and it has lasted a long time! They are tiny cherry tabs that disolve in 1 minute under the tongue. I only take one 2x a week in addition to my regular prenatal vitamin and my levels have been great. But again, I had VSG, not RNY.
You might want to consider a sublingual form of folic acid due to the malabsorption from the RNY? Your doctor could give you good feedback!
Good luck and congrats on the successful pregnancy! :)

Thank you for your reply. I spoke to my Surgeon and I should be ok with 1000 mcg in my prenatal vitamin and the B like you said.

Hi!! First of all congratulations!!! We share a surgery date! I also had the RNY, the first time I had it done was March 2nd 2010 but I had complications and they had to do re-enter on March 9th, so I consider that my official surgery date. . .lol. I am also pregnant but I'm only 8 weeks and 4 days so far. I've been very faithful with my vitamins since the surgery. . .I've heard too many horror stoies. .First thing in the morning I take an Iron in the afternoon I take a multi, a calcium, a B12, a D3 and I also eat a CAltrate chocolate calcium chew. At night before bed I would take the same round as the afternoon.  Since I found out I was pregnant.. . .I switched out my normal multi for a pre-natal and my OB told me to take an extra folic acid 3x a day. So I've been taking a 1,000 mcg 3x a day along with my plethera of vitamins that I've been taking. . . lol.   But you should really ask your doctor to see what he says, maybe everyone is different. I wish you the best of luck with everything!
