Gestational diabetes testing-can I pick your brain?

Can some of you tell me how you've been tested for gestational diabetes? This is mainly directed to my fellow RNY-ers.

My doctor sent me to a diabetes clinic at the hospital that included a 2 hour initial session! I was so annoyed. I've never had gestational diabetes, but I knew that instead of doing the glucose tolerance test, I would have to seek an additional method of getting tested...now I learn I have to test myself on a daily basis from now till delivery! UGGGH!

So the first hour was learning about the glucose meter, how to ***** myself, learn about what my reading should be etc. The second hour was with a dietician to learn how to eat properly..like as if I haven't had enough of that type of counselling in the past 2 1/2 years, prepping for surgery as well as post op. Anyhow, I sat through it. The other women in my class were just regular pregnant women, a little further along than me,  who were just daignosed with gestational diabetes. So off I go with my handy dandy meter, had to get a prescription for test strips, needles, ketone sticks as I also have to pee on those every morning to check my ketones and they want me to come back in a week for ANOTHER 1 hour session with a dietician to look over my readings and talk about what I eat..I finally put my foot down and said thanks but no thanks....I had to explain for the 3rd time that I do not have gestational diabetes, I never had it before, nor is there any unusual concern that I may be prone to it this time..I simply had surgery and can't be tested the traditional way...the response I got was "ohhhh, I get it"...so now they call me to harrass me to come back for a follow up, they call every other day. So I said "look, I'm testing myself 4 times a day. If and when I get a reading that is remotely CLOSE to an unsafe level, I'll be sure to seek my doctor's attention, please don't call me again"..lol..the woman responded by saying that I wasn't taking the interest of my baby into consideration so I had to explain YET AGAIN that I don't have any reason for concern, nor the time to take hours off work, pay for parking at a hospital for all of this. I've been educated, I know what the safe sugar levels are now, I gave my 2 hours, so leave me alone. I have no problems and would not hesitate or think twice for a second to go to any appt that was fully necessary and the health of my baby is my #1 priority, but this is a bit much...

anyone else have to go through this or something similar??

I had VSG, but puked up the glucola drink and refused to try it again! Instead my doctor ordered me a home glucose testing kit and had me test my blood sugar 4x per day for a few days. Once fasting and then one hour after breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Seriously testing your sugar 4 x per day is a million times more accurate than taking that stupid liquid test just once. Sorry your doctor's office is being ignorant and stupid.

Holy crap, I'm sorry but that's absurd!

I'm sleeved and with my pregnancy last year, I refused the glucose intolerance test, self-tested at home for 2 weeks around 28-30 weeks, 4 times a day. No issues.

I'm doing the same routine this time except they are having me start a little early, and I have to do three weeks. Admittedly, I've gained much quicker this pregnancy, and he's measuring "heavy".

I would seriously go off on someone to make those type of comments about not making my baby the priority.
