Weight Gain
Hello Everyone,
I had VSG in September of 2010 and lost 100lbs. I am thrilled with my results! I am now 23 weeks pregnant and have already gained 16lbs. This weight gain is not making me happy.
I always feel hungry and seem to be able to eat way more than I should. Since getting pregnant all I crave is starch, sugar and salt. I need to do something to get back on track.
I have read a bit on how important carbs are for a developing baby but they are the downfall of my weight. The only way I seem to be able to kick the carbs is to avoid them all together and go back to just meat and vegetables.
I am thinking about doing the 5 day pouch test to gain some control and hopefully kick my carb addiction.
What do you ladies think about this? Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you all,
Sondrapj
hey :) i had my surgery around the same time august 2010 and i lost 90lbs. i'm only 15 weeks pregnant. but honestly i really am not letting the weight gain bother me. it hasn't been a lot. like 10lbs so far. but i'm not sweating it. my doc never makes me feel bad about weight gain. and remember everyone gains differently bc every pregnancy is different. like you i'm craving carbs and especially sweets. i have been indulging probably more than i should. but as long as i get my waters, vitamins and proteins i'm ok. since i can't eat that much i don't see it THAT damaging. not like before surgery.
i don't know what the other ladies will say but i really don't suggest you do a pouch test while pregnant. now is not the time to be restricting things. try to stay low carb. drink tons of water, it helps. eat more protein. try to get protein in every meal. eat more fruits and veggies. i don't know about you but every time i try a pouch test it always backfires. it makes me feel really deprived just the way a crash diet would. i would ask your doctor. i'm all for eating healthy but now isn't the time to diet.
accept the fact that you're body is changing. its gonna get bigger. you're feeding your baby. you can always do the pouch test after the baby is born. and the weight will come off. so don't sweat too much. your baby needs the carbs. don't cut them out all together. hope this helps. maybe some other ladies will give you better advice. just my 2 cents.

I understand! I am trying to enjoy the whole pregnancy thing but not to much. What I did was get a pregnancy nutrition app on my phone, this way I was still tracking what I was eating and could tell what was good and bad. I also have the nike app for tracking your runs, I only walk but it does keep me honest about how far I have gone and the speed (much slower now that I am 33 weeks!). It seems that if I keep track of what I ate I made better decision. I am a carb addict and what I have done a few times during the pregnancy is go on a sugar detox, no sugars for a few weeks at a time and that helped me regain control. We do need healthy carbs but sugars we can do without. Good luc!
Thank you ladies. I will check with my Dr. Before doing anything. I worry that I will end up gaining 50lbs or something like that and then have to struggle to get it off. I know the less I gain the easier it will be to get back on track after. Thank you so much for the info it's nice to not feel alone.
Hello there,
I was a lot like you with my first pregnancy post WLS and I was absolutely mortified and in shear panic everytime I stepped on the scale and let me tell you something my fabulous OB Doctor told me. He broke down the math about all the things that are occuring and how much each thing weighed inside our bodies during pregnancy. This really seemed to help calm me down.
Anywho I can not for the life of me remember all the items he listed but there were a grip and it totaled 30 lbs.
He said anymore than 30 lbs that was pleasure weight not baby weight. I gained a total of 31 lbs with my son and if I would of stayed on track I would of had it all gone by his 4 month birthday. Now I am pregnant with my 2nd band baby and I weigh the same weight I did when I delivered my son and that is so painful to me but I know I only have myself to blame.
I hope this helps put things in perspective.
Take care,
Broom
