How long did you have to wait post surgery?

I am 13 months post RNY and just had my 1 yr followup with my surgeon. I'm 42(soon to be 43 later this month) and have 2 children (11yodd and 10yods). Hubby and I would love to have another child. I'm a nurse so I'm pretty frank when talking to my doctors and surgeon. I asked when we could start trying......He wants me to wait ANOTHER FREAKING YEAR!!!!

HELLO???? I'm gonna be 43, which I know is a bit old, but not really. I'd prefer not to be pregnant at 44 or even 45.

So I headed home, in tears and went to bed (I worked last night). Hubby was wonderful and very understanding.
I've got an appt next week with a new ob/gyn (my previous one moved to VA) to sort out what we're going to do (if we're gonna wait I'll need a different BC because condoms are not working for us very well).

I think waiting 2 years post op is the ideal, but lots of doctor's recommend waiting one year post op or 18 months post op as a minimum. There are lots of women about your age on this board that got the green light sooner based on their age. Did you ask your doctor why he wants you to wait another year? What does your OB think?
Its hard to recommend going against your doctor's advice, but some doctors are more conservative than others. I would be curious to know why he wants you to wait another year. If its just his general rule, or if there is a reason specific to you? That matters!
Good luck :)

i'm petrified my surgeon is going to tell me to wait 18 months (i'm planning on asking him at my 12 month check up in september).  i'm almost at goal, my weight loss has slowed, and i spent 2 years of fertility treatments prior to surgery (didn't work)..  if i have to go back to the reproductive endocrinologist, i'd like to go sooner rather than later (i'll be 37 in february).

i don't understand why dr.'s differ so much with this.  i'm also strongly considering going against what he says and i know this is not the right thing to do.  my vitamin levels are good and have been.  i'm just trying to think positively (no pun intended) and hoping he'll say he wouldn't recommend but wouldn't say no to 12 months.

i have only heard 12-18 months, not 2 years, that seems excessive to me?

I was told by my Dr to wait 1 to 1 1/2 years.... As long as you are not loosing a significant amount of weight anymore, should be fine....

I had Vertical Sleeve Surgery last July.  My doctor said he'd "like" me to wait at least a year, but the nutritionist that i worked with said to wait at least 9 months.  I was worried about my age also.  I'm 38 and had pcos and all those lovely infertility problems.  We waited 9 months and thought it would take awhile and we would probably have to go to a specialist again, and Surprise!!  Almost 9mos to the day we were pregnant.
Honestly, i think it depends on the person, and how well they are doing post surgery.  By the time I got pregnant I had lost 115lbs, gotten rid of my asthma, sleep apnea, and obviously pcos. I also have no signs of having any limitations, or high risk problems.
I'm 9.5 weeks pregnant and my ob saiid I probably will not gain any weight and that it's nothing to worry about as long as I'm eating like i have been since surgery.
I would have a serious talk with your surgeon and tell him your concerns about waiting any longer.
Hope this helps!!
