freaked out about gaining weight

I haven't posted on here for a while, but I need some advice...or maybe just a slap in the face or a hard dose of reality. I'm sure I can count on you all.

So, I'm almost 15 weeks pregnant and about 16 months post-op from my RNY. It's a surprise baby--we knew we wanted another one, but I was hoping to get at least 18 months out and at a stable weight before we started TTC. When I found out I was about 6 weeks along, I was completely blown away, as I had been steadily losing weight. I even ran a 5K the next day (I'd been training for it for a couple of months). At that point, I had lost almost 240 pounds and was so close to reaching one-derland.

Now, here I am a couple of months later, and I'm having a hard time getting on the scale and seeing it creep back up. I mean, I've only gained a few pounds--not sure if the scale at the gym is accurate, but I'm up about 4-5 pounds since my first OB appointment at 8 weeks. My appetite has definitely increased and I do keep it mostly in check, and I try to work out at least 2-3 times a week, but I'm still freaked out.

How do I mentally deal with gaining weight? I know it's all for a good cause, and I know that the baby needs the extra nutrition. I just worry that I'll never get back to where I was before I got pregnant...that it'll be next to impossible to lose the weight again. Anybody have some recommendations for me?

I'm not a biological mommy but one day I hope to be one (God willing).  But you seem to be doing great.  Keep exercising and eating healthy for your pregnancy.  You have no reason to go back to what you used to be.  You don't have to gain a lot of weight at all especially if you still have fat reserves.  Just eat for you and your baby.  I've always heard 300 more calories than you've been eating - a glass of skim or 2, yogurt or 2, cheese, fruit.  Good complex carbs and not going overboard.

Most people so early out don't have a huge gain anyway.

All the best to you.  You will do well.  Keep active!

The weight gain is a the biggest mental mind screw ever for us WLS mommas.  But here's the thing to remember... I don't think anyone has ever gaine 240 lbs during 1 pregnancy!  Also, I too had RNY and despite my thinking I'm invincable and might have those old cravings again during this pregnancy, I still have a pouch that is working well for me.  I'm 32w3d today and I've only gained 16.2 lbs so far duing the whole pregnancy.  I've been doing pretty well, but I have succumbed to the sweets/carb monster periodically throughout this pregnancy.  It happens.  Don't beat yourself up.  I too still remain active - I take a 30-60 min walk daily and I do prenatal yoga once a week.  I'm no runner, but that daily exercise keeps me going.

My advice: Try to eat as healthy as you can but don't beat yourself up about going off plan sometimes. Make sure you add in some healthy carbs to avoid ketosis.  Keep up the moderate excercise and drink plenty of fluids.  Most WLS mommies are able to drop the baby weight pretty quickly especially if we breastfeed.

Good luck, momma!

Take a deep breath and relax. Try not to obsess (I know it's hard!) and just focus on staying active and eating well. If you feel like your eating is getting out of hand, consult with a nutritionist so they can help you come up with a good eating plan. We've all been in this worried state! i can't say anything magical that will make you not worry, but you will get through this!

Thanks, everyone. I'm a little better today...think I just had a minor conniption yesterday when I weighed myself and saw that the scale was higher than it had been. Of course, it was also my first day to the gym after a week of cold-like symptoms, so it may not have been a good idea to step on the scale that day. I think it was just my first realization that, hey, I really am pregnant, I really do need to gain weight, and it's okay. You know?

So, eating healthy, exercising, and not freaking out. I can do this. Only about 25 more weeks to go :)

I feel your anxiety!
I'm about 21 months post op and 17 weeks pregnant. At my last OB appt Apr 27, when I was just over 14 weeks I hadn't gained a pound. Then I went to the doctor this past Monday and I'm up 7 lbs! I am freaking out! I am trying to look at it as only gaining 7 lbs in 17 weeks of pregnancy, but really, I gained 7lbs in just over 3 weeks! Not good!

I've given in to a lot of cravings and most of them have been bad...I really need to slow down on the junky carby foods and try to start exercising. I learned at 9 weeks that I'm anemic so I've been in a semi-coma for the past little while and am only JUST starting to get my energy up...but the thought of exercising is just not possible right now. UGHHH!

Hang in there!
