Positive HPT! BIG Surprise!

I had my RNY in January 2011 and up until now had been planning to wait the recommend 18 months to try for a baby...well, guess it wasn't meant to be--I had a positive test this morning! Technically two positive tests, though the first one was expired so I wasn't sure I could trust it. I'm going to take another one tomorrow (different brand--guess it just hasn't sunk in yet and I almost refuse to believe it).

Anyway! So, by my calculations, I'm just barely over 6 weeks, but then again my cycle has been all over the place since I stopped taking the pill last fall (it was doing weird things to my cycle so we opted for barrier methods instead). I could be farther along, I don't know. So what do I do now? Most OBs in my area say they won't see you until 8 weeks, but then again, I don't know of any around here that are familiar with post-wls pregnancies...so maybe I could call an office and see if they'd see me sooner if I explain my situation.

Basically, I'm sorta freaking out right now and am totally clueless as to what I should be doing. I've still been losing weight--not nearly as fast, but still pretty steady. I have an appt with my PCP next week to get on pre-natal vits, but what else do I need to do? Are there any specific labs and nutrient levels I need to make sure the OB checks (whenever I can get in to see one)? I have a feeling I'll be needing to be a guinea pig for whatever lucky OB I end up with around here, so...has anybody else been through this?

I did not add any carbs - you don't really need to as long as you're eating enough in general.

I also didn't switch to prenatals because my regular vitamins I was already taking more than covered what a typical prenatal contains. The only adjustments I made to my supplements is that I added a DHA supplement twice per day and stopped my vit A supplement (retinol/palmitate forms of vit A in high amounts can cause physical birth defects). I also increased my probiotics to 4 times per day after I ended up with a minor bacterial infection in my first trimester. Other than that, just continued my usual multis, calcium, iron, vit C, vit D, B12, and zinc.

Many OBs won't check nutritional labs, or at least not as many as we need to have checked. My first OB flat out refused to check any at all, so I ditched her. My new OB works with my PCP to stay on top of things, and I get all my lab orders from my PCP since she is more familiar with my personal medical history and WLS and whatnot.

Good to know for all of this, thanks. I guess I'm just mainly worried because I was still losing weight (it's only been 14 months since my RNY), but I've definitely noticed an increase in appetite, so maybe that's baby's way of making sure I eat enough to help him/her grow :) I made an appointment with an OB for next Thursday, when I'm supposed to be just barely 8 weeks. I'm not sure how much experience she has with post-WLS moms, but I'll make sure she either is willing to learn or I'll find someone else. I'm still in shock, but at least it's kinda-sorta sinking in now! I'm gonna be a mama again! I just hope this pregnancy goes a lot better than last one...then again, it should, since I weigh 140 pounds less than I did then...anyway! Glad to know I have a good resource here :)

I just got some suprise news myself 2 weeks ago, but I am 3 yrs post op. I couldnt believe how I would start the day feeling nautious, then eat everything in sight after 1 pm. I keep taking HPT too. Its just hard to believe.
My doc told me that I could go to a high risk OB if I wanted to, and if your insurance covered your surgery (a whole different insurance tale) then they will have some understanding of your health status and may cover a high risk OB. However. I was told the main concern is vitamin levels (you dont want too little or too much of anything, because it can cause defets in the fetus) and fetal growth, which could be stunted if you are not getting enough nutrients. Honestly, if you are sticking to your post op diet, you should be getting plenty of the essentials that you need. But frequent ultrasounds would measure fetal growth and catch anything that could possibly be prevented by nutritional intervention.
If my doc can agree to extra blood test and ultrasounds, I see no need to go to a different "high risk" doc. If you cant get to a high risk doc, see if you can reason with your OB to get extra ultrasounds and vitamin checks. I would start calling OBs now to see if they would be interested in a Post RNY prenancy, and you never know what you might find out!

Congrats to you! It's sunk in a little bit more, but still kinda surreal. I have one more pregnancy test in my medicine cabinet that I might take before I see an OB next week, just to reassure myself that I didn't dream the other three :P Plus, hey, it'll probably expire before the next time, anyway! haha

I have an appointment with an OB I am told has experience with post-RNY patients, and I plan to go armed with information on all the labs I need checked and all of that stuff. I'm just a little nervous because it's a practice I don't know, but I've heard good things, so we'll see how it goes. Can't wait to have that confirmation, though! For some reason, I just don't feel like it will be REAL until I have that doctor appointment and maybe even hear a heartbeat :)
