Glucose Testing
I am post op 21mths(gastric bypass) and am 19 weeks pregnant with my first child. I am concerned about the GTT(glucose test) which will be done in the next month or two by my OB. I do experience "dumping" and while my doctor has had previous lap band and gastric sleeve patients, I am his first bypass patient. He was very understanding when I told him that I felt the standard glucose drink would send me into violent dumping, and suggested if there was anything high carb I could eat and tolerate that we would just use that as a substitute for the drink and do the test that way. I am wondering how accurate the test will be, doesn't our body resist the processing of sugar after gastric bypass? Please tell me what you and your doctor did to check for gestational diabetes during your pregnancy. Thanks in advance for your feedback!
The gtt isn't recommened for rny pts. See if you can find some info online to give to your doctor or ask him to do some research on alternative tests. I discussed this with my doc and she was aware that the gtt is not a good idea. So, when we get to that point she will do a fasting blood draw and then have me check my blood sugar after meals for a couple weeks with a meter at home. Not a big deal as my hubby is diabetic and I am familiar with using the meter. They can also do an a1c blood draw to check your average bs over the past couple of months. That will give them an indication if your average blood sugars have been running high and would indicate the need for closer monitoring.

You could request a prescription for a home glucometer and test strips - that's what I have. I check my own glucose levels at home this way. I declined the usual glucose tolerance testing.
PP mentioned doing an A1C, but that actually isn't very good for detecting gestational diabetes because gestational can begin quite suddenly, so you can have a normal A1C but still have gestational diabetes. It would only be a helpful test if it does come back elevated, indicating you've had increased glucose levels, but if it comes back normal would NOT mean you're in the clear.

Even though I had VSG, and do not dump. I tested at home, 4 times a day for 2 weeks. I told my OBs that I rarely consume 75gr of sugar over the course of an entire day. Chugging that much in 5 minutes, in my opinion, is not going to give an accurate result. It was a pain in the butt to test at home, but I felt more comfortable doing the testing and recording my numbers for my obs to review.
Band to VSG revision: June 3, 2009

I'm a RNY pregger girl too. I just had my 23 wk appt w/my OB yesterday. She knows all about WLS patients. Since we dump, we do not do the standard GD test because that entails drinking 75g of a very sugary syrup that will sure to make you dump. What we're doing instead is a 10 hr fasting blood test (1st thing in the am) at 26 wks. They will check the 1AC in that blood test. Normal is 5.6%. If my results come back any higher than 5.6%, then they'll give me a home tester (***** the finger and test the blood sugar levels) for me to test my sugar levels at regular intervals (before eating, after eating, etc.) and then the OB will review those results.
Im 13 months post-op RNY and also 18 weeks 5 days pregnant since I was diabtic before WLS they want me to check my blood sugar levels 2 hours after I eat for rest of my pregnancy which is fine with me Im use to testing my blood sugars levels for any reason tell your doctor you cannot do glucose test you will dump and be sick afterwards and Its not good for you or baby.....
