Hair loss after having a baby
Hello everyone!! My name is Dana and I was a year out of RNY March 3rd. I also found out that we are expecting a suprise in October. I had'nt planned on getting pregnant this soon but we are thrilled. Morning sickness or as I like to call it "all day sickness" has almost got the best of me. With my son I wasnt sick the entire 9 months so this is an adjustment. Anyway, I have a concern that hopefully you guys will understand. I lost quiet a bit of hair after RNY. Thank God is stopped coming out before it got too noticeable but it is very thin now. After I had my c section with my son in 2007 I remember loosing alot of hair also. Im assuming it was due to the surgery. Has any of you had any experience with this and what effect do you think it will have on my pitiful RNY ravaged hair??

Hello Dana.
First of all, congrats!
I am sure that everybody reacts differently to child birth. I can tell you my experience, but its not a good one...LOL
I got pregnant 5 months out of RNY and was losing lots of hair from the RNY at the time. About 2 months into my pregnancy it stopped falling out and actually looked REALLY good. It stayed that way until my son was about 2 months old. Then HOLY CR*** it started to come out in hand fulls and looked horrible.
I became pregnant again when my son was 5 months old. At the time, my hair was still falling out pretty bad. It stopped falling out when I was about 8 weeks along and started to look healthy again.
Currently my hair is very thin, but does look better and is growing fast. I am not looking forward to what will happen after the birth of my 2nd. I may have to invest in a wig, but that's a small price to pay for 2 beautiful additions to my family.
Good luck

I lost half of my hair in volume with my VSG, starting at 3.5 months post-op, and it lasted 3 solid months. Tatum is 4 months old and guess what started last month? MASSIVE hair loss again. I'm leaving hair everywhere, even though it's cut super short, I have to pull it back when I cook or bake because my husband is really tired of finding hair in his dinner plate HA.
I'm 8 weeks pregnant and have new growth coming in around the temple area so I'm hoping that the mega prenatal I'm taking will help the new growth. Right now, it's coming out by the handfuls, and my shower drain is constanly having to be cleaned out. My other child is almost 14 yrs old and I honestly do not remember if I lost hair after his arrival. I'm pretty sure my hair is going to be pretty horrific for the next year considering I'll have 2 within 11 months of each other, plus a puberty-ridden teenager who thinks he knows way more than I do about life. Least to say, it should be interesting. If it doesn't fall out, I might pull it all out!

It's not hormones or nutrition or stress or whatever...Google "telogen effluvium." It's 110% normal to lose hair after giving birth or after a major surgery or any other major trauma to the body. The good news is, your hair should grow more and NOT fall out WHILE you are pregnant, so you might sort of recoop some hair until you lose it again about 2-3 months after the birth.
really it is hormones... estrogen is what makes your hair stay in the "growing phase"...then once the hormones return to a normal state your hair goes back into a regular cycle allowing it to fall out...

Same thing - look up telogen effluvium. You and I are not really disagreeing, but there can be more at play than just estrogen, which is why you can get the same result after surgery, not just pregnancy.
I have always had really thin hair and post RNY it was just starting to grow back when I got pregnant and now it's out of control with all the hormones and the new hairs sprouting up everywhere. I think it took about 3-6 months after each of my kids were born for my hair to start falling out. I am not looking forward to it but its just one of those things you cant avoid...
