HELP Im pregnant
Well I am almost 3 years post op and have found out I am 6 weeks pregnant. YAY!!!(If I have any of you on Facebook this is still not public so mumms the word)I have some questions (well more like I need advice) from all the WLS Vets who have been pregnant post surgery.
How did you deal with morning sickness was it different with a pouch? I feel like I get a tad queezy unless I constantly eat small things.
Cravings... I'm deathly afraid of these, how did you deal?
Vitamins? The Dr hasn't given me any recommendations as of yet so I'm taking One a Day Paternity, B12, Iron and Folic Acid. Is there anything else I should be taking or should ask my Dr about regarding supplements?
What did you do for the Glucose Tolerance Test, I still Dump from sugar?
Also anything else you could think of that would be helpful for me, I would greatly appreciate.

Hello. I've had RNY and work at an obgyn clinic. I am pregnant as well and these were many of the same concerns I had. I would talk to your doctor about your vitamins. I talked to mine and all she kept me on was a easy absorbtion prenatal vitamin and it is working just fine. I have a TON of sugar cravings ( I've always been a salt eater!). I have been very careful to try and not eat much sugar, but sometimes that craving just won't go away. I keep protein packed granola bars around for such an occasion. (They also seem to help with the morning sickness, for me.) As far as you gestational diabetes test... make sure your ob knows that you've had wls. Since WLS is becoming more and more popular, you might be hardpressed to find an ob that hasn't had a WLS patient. My ob has us do a jellybean test where instead of drinking the liquid, you eat a certain amount of jellybeans in a controlled amount of time. Although this could still cause dumping, it still serves the purpose of the test. I think most physicians will skip the test.. in which case I believe they treat you like a diabetic anyway and all they will do is monitor your diet which is probably already fine. (you always have the option to skip the test... its your body) I hope some of this helps!!

Congrats! I am also 6 weeks pregnant tomorrow! My doc has me taking all my normal post surgery vitamins, plus a prenatal vitamin. She drew blood to check my b12, iron, and vitamin d levels. I am waiting for those results..and that blood draw was before adding the prenatal. However, she told me to start the prenatal anyway. We may need to adjust and add more as we go along. Also, she said she will not subject me to the GTT. However, we will do a fasting sugar at the appropriate time and will check with a meter for a couple weeks, if need be. I already had some issues with late onset reactive hypoglycemia prior to getting pregnant. I have kept that in check with frequent small balanced meals. Can't help you with the morning sickness question, as I am in the same boat. =) Just starting to have a tiny bit myself.

First, congratulations :)
I did not have morning sickness. I did have a bit of nausea early in my first trimester, but it eventually just went away. I eat all day long (seriously, at least every 2 hours), but I stuck with protein and fat with very limited carbs throughout all of my first trimester, and it worked really well for me.
I don't have any crazy cravings. I did earlier on, and I ignored them or ate something similar that was a better choice. I wanted nothing but grilled cheese sandwiches and mac and cheese for a couple of weeks, but I held strong and had things like fried queso blanco, microwaved cheese crisps, etc., and the craving eventually went away. After all, sometimes I have cravings when NOT pregnant, and I don't just give in to them all the time, so I didn't use pregnancy as an excuse to do so, either.
I did not change my vitamins from pre-pregnancy because the multi I was taking already had more folate than the prenatals I compared it to at the store. All I did was add a DHA supplement. I notice your list doesn't include calcium - do you not normally take any calcium??
I declined the glucose tolerance test. I have a DS, not RNY, but I still knew chugging a bunch of sugar wouldn't be a good idea. I just use a home glucometer and check my glucose levels myself.

Thank you for your response. Just to note on the calcium. I do take one caltraite plus vitamin D soft chew . I also eat a lot of dairy. As the days go on, I do feel a little more queezy and tired. But getting closer to the point where I can tell people. I am 6 weeks today and am excited for the next few months when I, as well as others will finally be able to tell that Im pregnant. Keep the suggestions comming, Im collecting them. Also if there is anything particular I should bring up with my OB as for my 'special' needs.
