1 year+ out from surgery and TTC....nervous
I had a great day at the doctor and got my IUD taken out but I would be lying if I said I wasn't concerned or worrysome. I am super excited about being a mom and the adventure of TTC and being pregnant but I can't help be nervous about gaining a lot of weight back. How did you guys handle with the pregnancy weight gain? Did you gain a lot? Did lose it afterwards? How was your pregnancy experience in general after having WLS? Any advice or tips would be great!! Thanks so much!

This is my first pregnancy, so I have no pre-op experience to compare to. I'm 35 weeks along right now, so I also can't speak to losing weight after the birth since I'm not there yet! But I can say I continued eating very healthy, low in carbs (did eat some fruit and dairy, but no grains or starchy veggies), high in fat and protein throughout my first and into my second trimester, and I actually lost 12 pounds in that first trimester. I've since regained that weight and then some, but I'm still only about 20 pounds above my pre-pregnancy weight and can expect to only gain maybe 5 more pounds (they say to expect about a pound a week near the end). Since I haven't gained an exorbitant amount of weight, I'm not too worried about losing again after the baby - plus, I plan on getting pregnant again in the future, so...
I've had two pregnancies, one before surgery, one after. With the first I gained about 22 pounds, 18 with the second. With both pregnancies I was able to lose the weight within the first few weeks after the baby was born. Here is where they were different, with my pre wls baby I gained a lot of weight while I was nursing, with this baby, I've lost a few below my pre pregnancy weight and plan on continuing to lose. My post op pregnancy was very easy and uneventful (although so was my first). I didn't have any issues related to my surgery. Good luck, it is an amazing adventure!
I'm in kind of the same boat as you..I had my IUD taken out just over a month ago..I'm 18 months post op. Had 2 kids before surgery and now TTC as I type this...well--not EXACTLY as I type this..lol..
I'm in the 2 week waiting period right now, although my ovulation "week" was last week, we didn't get to do "it" as much as we had hoped..our schedules suddenly became super hectic last week-of course, of all the weeks to be out of sync with each other. They say it only takes one time, but I wish I could have maximized the opportunity and covered our bases better. Time will tell! I may have some good news on or around March 2/3....yikes! Good luck to you though! I'm also concerned with gaining back weight, I've been excercising a bit since I took out my IUD in preparation to lose a few pounds before I conceive and my "plan" is to continue walking on the treadmill (that's my definition of excerising) if and when I become pregnant. That way I can hopefully keep off any unnecessary "non-baby" weight. Keep us posted!

I'm 20w5d now w/my 1st pg. I've only gained 6 lbs in the 20 wks (I don't weigh myself daily.) My OB is very happy with my weight progress. I started this pg at 183 lbs. So she gave me a goal of gaining 20-30 lbs during the whole pregnancy - keeping closer to the 20 side.
What I found during the early stages of pg is that if I stay to a healthy bariatric meal plan (I hate the for letter "D" word) then the lbs will slowing come on in a healthy way as the baby grows. Now... that being said... I have been attacked by the Carb/Cookie Monster! I was up to 8 lbs gained at 18wks. So I cut out all simple carbs and strictly stayed with lean proteins and complex carbs (fruits & veggies only.) I did that for 2 days and immediately dropped 2 lbs and have remained stable there.
Jess, we have all the knowledge we need to manage the baby weight gain in a healthy way. AND... pregnancy is a very precious time. Do not stress yourself out over the weight. Most women are able to quickly drop the baby weight after the baby is born (with breast feeding and healthy bariatric meal plans.) You did it before with your WLS. Those skills are still there. :-)
The TTC process can be a crazy emotional ride. It's different for everyone. Be gentle with yourself and make sure you have open communications with your partner.
